That's only a half million dollars ($500,000) per regular season game for the next 5 years. He is totally worth it.....

Being a money person I don't get what the NBA is doing. They have a soft cap $99m but you can pay one player out of 15 $40m a year? What a stupid system, makes no sense at all. So if you have 3 "super max" guys you have $120m just in 3 players a year?? Beyond stupid!

Explain to me how GS can pay curry 40 mil.. pay durant.. pay draymond and Klay.... Explain pls. We couldnt get pg without Hayward first ****

The Larry Bird exception allows teams to exceed the salary cap to re-sign their own free agents, at an amount up to the maximum salary. To qualify as a Bird free agent, a player must have played three seasons without being waived or changing teams as a free agent.

There is no hard cap in the NBA. So you can have several max players if your owner is willing to pay a luxury tax.
Right, so how are they going to re-sign Durant then?  Is he going to take another discount when his buddy just signed a world record contract?

and what's with Shaun Livingston taking a home-town discount while Curry becomes a billionaire?

My prediction:  GS wins one more championship in 2017-18, and then falls apart.

Yes, Durant has to be re-thinking his declaration that he would sign for less to allow the team to re-sign guys like Livingston & Iggy. Why should he if Curry doesn't lower his demands? Maybe we should be calling Durant right now?

They can offer Durant 120% of what he made last year (up to the max). They can't sign him for more than that because they don't have his Early Bird (allowing 130% of his previous contract) or full Bird (allowing any amount up to the max) rights, but they can still go over the cap to sign him

He's eligible for $31.8 million next season, which is ~$3.2 million less than he could get with a full max. Next year he'll be eligible for a 30% raise on a new contract, which should put him at the 10 year max.

Luxury tax hell is gonna hit them soon, though, and no amount if winning will keep the team in the black when that happens
I'm bitter.

They can, but it's gonna cost them a ton of money in luxury tax. Like, too much money for the team to turn a profit once the repeater tax kicks in (if it hasn't already)

Yea I understand that but I'm seeing guys like Jrue Holiday get $25m a year! So if every decent player from here on out is going to get $25m a year every team will be over the cap soon. I don't believe the NBA can withstand these kind of salaries/payrolls that are going to balloon up. There will be a lockout in the near future, this is not sustainable!!

GS is bright as the sun. They will pick Durant and Curry over the others and be a perenial contender, because the fit of the duo is way better than westbrook + Durant. They can then trade the other stars for high draft picks and young players that will develop playing close to KD and Curry for cheap.

Let's suppose they had traded Klay plus some future picks for the equivalent of this year 1st pick + one of Smart, Crowder and Bradley. Wouldn't a Golden State team without Klay and Iguodala still be the favourite to win it all?

I LOVE the soft cap.  Always have.

A team SHOULD be able to resign their own players if they are willing.  I think of the three major sports, the nba system makes the most sense.
