Marcus Smart is a lunch pail bench player, offensively challenged. What part of Jaylen having absolutely no handle don't some of you get? He's got no skills on the offensive end, and though he shows signs defensively, he's often lost there too. He's a solid little prospect with great athleticism. Raw as hell.

Bigs aren't winning anybody anything these days, you need size, but traditional bugs are dead. BK 18 is sketchy is if it's a big man draft.

The youth we have is nothing special, nobody is salivating at any one guy we have across the league. Fultz maybe, but we don't need a PG, we have a better scorer than Paul Pierce at that position for crying out loud.

What we actually need is a large 2 guard 6 ft 7 or so, and a big SF with length. Maybe we'll get a decent PF someday, I hope so.

I'm not enamored with a single young player we have or is incoming. I'm not a hater, there are plenty of players that I enjoy watching, but the rose colored glasses here is sad.

Lol you seen enamored with any of our young talent, but you aren't a hater?

Riiiight.

Can't see that we have the #1 pick in the draft, a good shot at a high pick again next year, and cap room for a max free agent.  Add that to Thomas and Horford, with a strong mix of young vets like Bradley, Crowder and Smart, a young big in Zizic, and Jaylen Brown (who I think much more highly of than you, but opinions will vary).  My glass is very half full.

Ok here we go. Lets assume we draft Fultz we still have no idea what he is until he starts playing NBA ball.

Brown I like, has a ton of potential.
Smart is a bench player.
Rozier wont get off the bench in this scenario (and I like him, think he has a chance to be a back up in the league).
Ziczic is like Fultz, sounds good lets wait and see.

Like Roy said. Keep playing to win now and add young talent that you hope can blossom. Don't tear it down for draft picks, we already have those.

We have the #1 pick in a "loaded" draft.

If you arent excited about that, you are the one with the bias.

But if you wanna continue the superiority trip, thats fine too.

Wow, I think I'm a skeptic, but that's about the most negative appraisal of an Eastern Conference finalist with multiple young assets I could imagine.

Congratulations!

We're a one man offense, though Al Horford has seriously enhanced it.

We have two players that are truly elite, Thomas and Horford. Thomas as a pure scorer and Horford as one of the leagues best jack of all trades, he's as dynamic of a big man as you can get.

Avery Bradley is a very good, albeit inconsistent player. I'd love him as a 6th man or starting 2 of we had a star 3 and borderline 4. Really we need bigger wings, so it's tough.

I'm not down on our team at all, I just think we're very talent deficient. Isaiah's greatness and Brad's coaching can't hide that outside of Horford and Bradley, we have no. other players that contenders would feature.

If Thomas was only 3/4 as good as he is, we'd have lost to the Wizards and probably the Bulls without Rondo.

"Only" two elite players! That's a good start. Jaylen is 20. His athletic talent is obviously elite, his work ethic is excellent, and unlike Marcus his shot isn't broken. His PPP on offense was near the top of all rookies, just below Embiid and above 23-year old "RoY candidate" Marco Saric. His individual defense is already solid and so is his rebounding. I have no idea why you don't project him as an all-star down the road. Maybe it'll turn out he never improves his handle; I'll take the over on that bet. And I can't wait to see his D up LBJ in a couple years. No question in my mind he's going to give the king all he can handle.

the only really impressive asset on that list is Markelle Fultz.

INTERESTING that you find Fultz who has not played a second in the NBA as the only impressive asset on the proposed team.

I like a lot of the pieces. I think Brown will be really good. I think Smart is a classic x-factor roleplayer who hascan played a big role in big playoffs series's. I like Zizic. I hope he can become a starting level big man. Rozier could become a nice offensive spark plug who could offer really good individual defense. Brooklyn '18 could be a top 4 pick.

That said, Markelle Fultz is clearly the most impressive asset in that list. Its not even close. The only other pieces with real star potential are Nets '18 which is a year away and anything can happen and Jaylen Brown, who DID have an impressive rookie campaign, but Im not sure many people outside of the Celtics fanbase would look at him as a great foundational piece.

You could sign Hayward and wait on IT. If IT is healthy but Fultz explodes you then trade IT at the deadline. Horford is up before you need to resign Brown/Fultz. Then year after Hayward expires. But if you get a good offer for IT or AB at draft you pull that trigger.

Not quite. Main reason noone is talking about this plan is because it hasn't occurred to anyone yet as an idea; much like going back into Vietnam.

The OP first mooted this plan, and now people are definitely talking about it, they are excited for it, much like getting excited to witness judgement day, or watching car crash videos.

Adding free agents right now is a bad plan actually (unless you can sign a superstar), since the free agency market is bad right know (from a franchise stand point) due to the salary cap increases which allows several teams to overpay for players.

The market was bad in 2015, incredibly bad in 2016, it will be bad in 2017, probably back to normal in 2018 and the market will be great in 2019 and 2020. We really should try to set ourselves up to profit from the supply of available free agents in 2019 and 2020 and the lack of possible teams to sign them.

Let other teams overpay for their players and get stuck with bad contracts. Let's not do the same. Thomas, Hayward (and Horford) are very questionable options for max contracts, because we have the opportunity to give it to them doesn't mean we should.

Sure, our core if we eventually win a chip will probably be Fultz/Smart/Brown and possibly Zizic/Crowder/Bkn '18, together with a FA or two. But this isn't a plan exactly so much as the reality of the fact that young players get better and old players get worse. In the meantime, there's no reason not to go for Hayward, pay some luxury tax to keep IT around, and think about a reload when Horford's contract expires.
