I'm all for Melo in a backup safety option.  I believe the 2nd year left on his contract is a player option, which he is likely to decline to get one last contract before he retires.  So, it could be a 1 year rental and make the decision after we see how the season goes.  I don't think it will cost much to get him.  Maybe Rozier and Crowder (with a non-BK first round if needed) for Melo and O'quinn, while we eat up the salary difference.

I think we would still have around 8 million to work with after this deal. O'quinn would help out with rebounding and blocking.  I think Melo would play much better once he gets a change of scenery and comes to a team that emphasizes team and defense.

You don't even have to give up Crowder. Something like Zeller and one of Jonas/Amir(in a S&T)for salary matching plus the Clippers' first and one of Rozier or Boston's own 2018 pick probably gets it done.

To give up non-guaranteed Zeller, I think the trade would have to be done before July as Zeller's contract will become guaranteed end of June, unless Knicks are willing to be in the hook for Zeller next year.  I don't think Danny will prematurely make a trade for Melo before trying to get G Hayward in free agency.

I can see Danny reaching an agreement with Zeller to move his contract guarantee date (currently 7/2) later in the summer in exchange for not waiving him immediately (similar to what we did with Amir and Jerebko this season).  I don't know if Zeller would agree to it, but the market for players his caliber is typically nonexistent for the first week or so of FA, so there wouldn't be too much of a downside to it for him.

We should also be able to make the deal without Zeller (just using cap space) if we either trade AB or Crowder or we let KO walk
I'm bitter.

The time to have made a trade for Carmelo was at the past trade deadline, where Danny could have used Amir Johnson's contract to help match salaries. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe a team is allowed to combine other players in a sign and trade, to help match salaries. So unless a third team is involved, I don't see how trading for Carmelo is even possible, while still holding onto our core pieces.

Count me as someone who would like to see him in green. A change in scenery, and going to a winning environment, would help him tremendously.
Boston can absorb most of his contract into cap space, that is why it would be a fall back option.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah

I am on record as being on the Melo train as an option after Hayward.

There were reports at the deadline that the Cs coaching staff was interested.

Then I saw this yesterday from Steve Kyler:

Was told at the Deadline, Celtics did not see Melo's style of play as being compatible with what they were building twitter.com/CeeTizzy/statu…

If that is the case, maybe Melo is a moot issue.

I hope not. Melo would be a great fallback plan if we whiff in FA.
