back to back games are not the best prescription for a balky ankle, sore shoulder or a bruised tailbone
this maybe an early season game that doesn't need to be won-
there are 4games next week and horford will be back

I do wonder if Brad should let Bradley sit out. Without Horford and Crowder against Cleveland, it's likely a loss anyway. Be willing to take the loss and let the young guys get some extra run.

Hmmmm interesting idea.

Start:

Rozier
Smart
Brown
Amir
Zellar

Bench
Jackson
Mickey
Green
Young

See how the kids play and give Bradley and IT a rest?     Sounds like a POP move and I don't think it gives the kids a bad taste i their mouth.   What if they won?

Or do we grind it out and try to win at all costs?

I like the idea, and I do think this is a hard game to win, but after last year's tie with the other 3 teams, I hate the idea of throwing a game away to let the young guys play.

marcus is the glue guy but he was limping  and came back in shortly but i caught it a 2nd time
he also stated his lungs were burning and missed his fouls shots both of them short front rim-a sign of tired legs maybe
avery and smart in my opinion should not risk further injury-

Already missing our best rebounder/rim protector, our best Lebron stopper, and our best bench scorer. Why not? this game could get ugly after a quarter.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

I think Smart should play. Especially if his conditioning is an issue. This will only help. Bradley and IT can sit though.

I wouldn't mind doing this, but Brad would not do this at all. He's a winner at all costs. He's gonna try to win every game, so I think we still play everyone we can play.
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

No.
No.
Hell no.

You don't play the games to lose. You don't send the message it's ok to give up when times are difficult and the odds are against you. This is a team whose identity is that it's a tough, scrappy team. You want to send a message that they're not tough, good or scrappy enough to play the Big Bad Cavs and they just roll over and play dead? You might as well rip the heart out of the team.

The next game isn't until Sunday night at home versus the Nuggets. That's plenty of time for any non-injured player to recover (and time for Horford to come back). If there's a high risk of injury to someone like Bradley then perhaps he sits. But if it's just soreness that's no worse than it has been you play him and you play to win. Because if you do manage to win a game like this - shorthanded, on the road, 2nd night of back to backs then you make true believers that they can achieve anything. This would pay off massively in the playoffs against the Cavs.

There's a difference between playing dead and resting players. Ask Popovich. The players who are out there play to win.

My other thought about tonight's game is inspired by Mike Gorman's comment last night that the Cleveland crowd would either be really happy or really sad (depending on the outcome of Game 7 of the world series). Maybe a dead crowd helps us?

There's a huuuuuuuuuuge difference between this young Celtics team and a very established, multi-Championship-winning Spurs team. The Spurs already know they're contenders. The Celtics don't. The Spurs know how to win. The Celtics are still learning. The Spurs know who they are. The Celtics are still figuring it out.

When this group has won a couple Championships, IT is 31, Bradley is 30 and they're pretty much assured of winning 60+ games a season then I won't mind Brad giving them a night off. But not now. Not this team.

I dont see why sitting certain players in the interest of long term health and strength of the team is "playing to lose"....

From afar, given the aches, pains and limping from AB and Smart, I'd sit both of them, along with Horford and Jae.

IT
Young
Jaylen
Jerebko
Amir

Jackson
Rozier
Green
Mickey
Zeller

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
If Bradley's shoulder is legitimately not doing well, then I don't have an issue with him playing. IT should be out there, though, along with everybody else not named Horford, Crowder, and KO.

Granath makes some good points and you don't want to go out there just to lose (hence, why I have IT playing), but if Bradley (or anyone else) could use a few days to get back to 100%, then I have no issue with that. It would be a good game to see more of Brown and Rozier.

If a guy has to sit out for health then sit him, but it doesn't sound like that's what's being proposed. What's being proposed is let the Cavs roll over the C's because they've got some injuries. It's professional sports, getting injured is part of the game. Next man up.

But anything less than full effort out of this team that has a lot of work to do because they can really be considered contenders, is not acceptable.

And I think Brad Stevens thinks so too.
