What did Pierce do to burn a bridge?

Basically the 02 team not only lost an international game for the first time in the pro era, they were seen as malcontents who played arrogant, self-centered me-first ball.  And wound up finishing sixth, by far the worst finish a USA team has had in the pro era, and possibly even in the amateur era too.

Rightly or wrongly Pierce was one of the main scapegoats, definitely didn't get along with the coach, and was the target of lots of handwringing articles and commentary.  It wasn't a coincidence he wasn't invited back to the 04 team.

Sure, but he was invited to the 06 team, so I'm not sure how much of that I buy.  The 04 team didn't do well either.

John Holland was a top player of the Puerto Rican team this summer, but they lost in the finals of their qualifying tourney to Serbia, who was hosting. So John Holland was the closest we came to having a current Olympian on the roster this year.
