But I still spend time watching and thinking about other teams, like the Warriors. During the playoffs, the Celts are almost an afterthought. Because the big time show is getting good. The Warriors are the show that you talk about with friends and family. Game of Thrones.
We can get there. Warriors and Thunder were build throught the draft. 3rd pick might end up future all star. I believe Celtics will be relevant again soon either way
This season I'd say the key players on the team were Thomas, crowder, Amir, Bradley, Turner, Smart, Sullinger, and Olynyk.
In three years, how many of those guys will still be here? Will they still be good? How about in five?
That's my test for an up and coming team. The Celts are young, sure, but most of that youth is in the form of draft picks (total mystery box) and guys who have barely played so far.
Going from that list above, it seems to me the Celts long term core is Jae crowder, who is locked up long term. He's decent, and will be at the end of his prime after his current contract.
The other piece is Smart. Still tough to say what caliber of player he will be in the league long term.
Aside from those two, it's draft picks and guys we haven't really seen play, like rozier and Mickey. Maybe you could add in Olynyk, but I see him as a useful bench guy who is a decent bet to get traded or maybe just overpaid to start somewhere else.
Isaiah will be thirty in three years and he will want a max deal when his current one is up. I would be concerned for the Celts if they sign him to such a deal for his early thirties.
So bottom line, I don't entirely agree with looking at the Celts as a young team on the rise. Certainly they have the draft assets to make that happen. But there is no guarantee whatsoever it'll work out that way. The young centerpiece talents just aren't here yet. We can hope that number three and the Brooklyn picks the next two years will become that, but it's worse than a coin flip odds that it'll happen that way.
