Brett Dawson: John Calipari says whatever NBA team takes Skal Labissiere in the draft is essentially getting the No. 1 pick in 2018 or 2019.

So is he just talking him up because he wants him to go high in the lottery , or does he really believe this ? I saw in a thread on realm that his measurements are very Similar to Noel . I watched him a few times and thought he was pretty impressive down low , but is still really raw .

So what do you think , if we fall to 5 or lower, is he worth the gamble ?
Yes, Labissierre is just dying to come out 2 years early and be taken 5+ spots lower, right? Seems rational.

Well when you take into account major injuries can happen , and the fact that he wants to make money now , it does make some sense .

Maybe he would have actually been used right in 2018 or 2019.

You're right, he should definitely wait 2 years to maybe be #1, but more likely drop even further, probably out of the lottery

It's rarely a good idea to drop out of the draft if you're a predicted lottery pick.  Porzingis could be an exception, but I don't think anyone thought he would go in the lottery
I'm bitter.

I have not seen him play enough to be able to make a statement like this first hand but when I see things like this, I am concerned:
Quote
"Anytime you see a guy who just doesn't seem to react well to the ball coming off the rim, the ball bounces off the rim, and there's a delay between when that happens and when he's able to react to it, that's scary," a second NBA scout said.

That is the Fab Melo, Patrick O'Bryant syndrome.  If you don't have the natural reactions, you can't play in the NBA no matter how tall or athletic you are.

I think there are better options.

he's definitely a high risk, high reward type for those people who like to use picks on those types of players.  I'd consider him at 16 if he's still there where he's less of a bust if he doesn't develop

He looks like a player with high upside in those highlights. I see all the hype now. I hope the Celts pick him somewhere, ideally trade up.

I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

Got a nice jumper.

Schmitz also has Zhou Qi taking jumpers too. It's on his Twitter page.

Qi looked really good in that clip. Looks like he's improved his form a lot - looks more fluid, high release point, good elevation for a 7 footer. Pretty unblockable. Might be a lottery pick.

Of course Cal says that.

His job is to get his guys drafted. What he didn't do is teach Skal how to be successful in team basketball.

That might be up to Brad.

It's partly Cal trying to improve his image.

But I don't think he would say this if Labissiere is a bust waiting to happen.

So he'd be a 22 or 23 year old first overall pick. Got it.

Big players take longer to develop "usually".   Not everyone is Karl towns

look at the history of big player prospects and how long it took them to establish themselves in the NBA

You got more body to "fill".  Or "condition" in the case of Okafor , who is still ways away

Again, Towns is an exception and ppl think if you are not like towns as a freshman, you won't be good in the NBa.  "FALSE"

This is why I'm a fan of Sabonis.  In two years of college ball he has developed/improved many aspects of his game. I can only see him refining further (jump shot etc)

SKAL has amazing tools for a big man. Especially some natural skills big players will never develop. Like a dribble, stop and pop. Or turn around J.    He can rebound and the attempt is there but he is getting pushed.   But his frame can add more weight (eye test).  So with this, you bank on that he will be a good rebounder eventually

I want the Celts to take Skal and Sabonis.  We need frontcourt help  (practical). And if there was a great player 3-5 range (non front court) well you take that player. But there isn't.   As much as I like Murray, he could end up becoming JJ Reddick part 2.    skal could become the player many teams "missed" instead.
