Yesterday I was reading an article on The Vertical on what typically goes into a player getting a draft promise. To paraphrase it went on to say that typically an under developed young player or a Euro will receive a promise from a team late in the first before the draft process starts if the team wants to go that route.
This led me to look at the list of guys who have declared and may fit that mold for the Cs. Based on nothing other then my own observations I think Swanigan could fit that mold for the Cs. I am not advocating making draft promises as I think they typically hurt more then they help. This was merely the path that brought me to looking further into Swanigan as a potential celtic.
Most of you will cringe at the idea because he is another undersized wide body big man. He is the same exact height as Sully and last weighed in at USA basket and last weighed in at 254 but Purdue lists him at 270. As for length he is very long with a 7'4.75" Wingspan and a 9'.025" standing reach. By comparison Sully measured a 7'1.25" wingspan and 8'9.5" standing. At this size like Sully Swanigan should be able to compensate for his lack of height inside. Aside from his length what intrigues me about his is his ability to face up and score and his rebounding. In only 25.8mpg he averaged 8.2 rebounds this alone is an impressive number but add to it the fact that he is often playing out of the paint and along side a true post center in Hammons or Haas and this really highlights his rebounding prowess. Being that he is often put the position of trying to create space for the bigs he saw alot of time outside the paint on offense. While still developing as a shooter he really looks natural shooting the ball out to the college 3pt line. This season he shot 29% on 2.2 attempts from 3 and 71% from the FT line.
Long and short of it as a late first Caleb Swanigan could make for an excellent pick who can provide a similar level of rebounding with possibly more perimeter skills down the road then Sully. He turns 19 next month so he is still very early on in his development with time I think he can be a real steal.
