I'm not sure you can win a championship with Horford as your second best player.
You'd need a top 10 player as your #1 and even then you'd be underdogs.
Maybe with Durant as your #1 and Stevens as coach but even then it's pretty thin.
Only way I want Horford is if he gives us a decent deal at something like 3 x$20 million or something.
Yeah I agree - I would do it on a contract like that.
But looking at his drop in production lately, combined with his age, I honestly predict that Horford likely only has maybe 2 - 3 years left of being able to produce at close to his current rate.
History shows that players like Horford (undersized, offensive oriented bigs) tend to start to decline pretty rapidly once they reach the age of 32-33. Horford might buck that trend, but when you consider the fact that his stats are already starting to drop off...I doubt it.
I do like Horford, and I do think he improves the team - but I don't love him and I don't think he's a major difference maker. Happy to add a solid vet like Horford who can give us 2-3 years of quality production, but I would be concerned about overpaying for what is essentially a 3 year rental (by the fourth year he'd probably be the same player David West is right now).
I wouldn't be a very big fan of signing Horford up for something like $30M/4. I feel like that is a MASSIVE overpay for a player of Horford's age and caliber. I wouldn't HATE the deal because I do like Horford as a player - I just wouldn't like it, because I feel like it's an overpay that could really hurt our flexibility in the future...and I don't feel that Horford impacts us enough right now to justify sacrificing that future flexibility.
