I'm not sure you can win a championship with Horford as your second best player.
You'd need a top 10 player as your #1 and even then you'd be underdogs.

Maybe with Durant as your #1 and Stevens as coach but even then it's pretty thin.

Only way I want Horford is if he gives us a decent deal at something like 3 x$20 million or something.

Yeah I agree - I would do it on a contract like that.

But looking at his drop in production lately, combined with his age, I honestly predict that Horford likely only has maybe 2 - 3 years left of being able to produce at close to his current rate.

History shows that players like Horford (undersized, offensive oriented bigs) tend to start to decline pretty rapidly once they reach the age of 32-33.  Horford might buck that trend, but when you consider the fact that his stats are already starting to drop off...I doubt it.

I do like Horford, and I do think he improves the team - but I don't love him and I don't think he's a major difference maker.  Happy to add a solid vet like Horford who can give us 2-3 years of quality production, but I would be concerned about overpaying for what is essentially a 3 year rental (by the fourth year he'd probably be the same player David West is right now).

I wouldn't be a very big fan of signing Horford up for something like $30M/4.  I feel like that is a MASSIVE overpay for a player of Horford's age and caliber. I wouldn't HATE the deal because I do like Horford as a player - I just wouldn't like it, because I feel like it's an overpay that could really hurt our flexibility in the future...and I don't feel that Horford impacts us enough right now to justify sacrificing that future flexibility.

That's why if we can land a star such as Bulter by the draft say with the Nets pick, Bradley and Johnson it would help reel in Horford and then  Durant.  If Horford takes somewhat less than the max ( maybe you just give him the max years) you might be able to make the numbers work after releasing JJ, all the cap holds, then re-sign say Sully and Turner with their bird rights after the big signings are done.

If we cut JJ and Amir and sign Durant for 25 mil we will have 25 mil left.

Only way we get Butler is if we send out 15 mil in cap. That would mean Bradley and Crowder and maybe even Smart would have to go.

Probably still worth it tho.

Thomas
Butler
Durant
Horford
Sullinger

Kelly
ET
Rozier
Mickey
Young
Hunter

Could be a real contender. Question is, will Chicago listen to offers on Jimmy:

I think DA will pass over Al until he is certain he can't get a super star .  Horford is a good dude , but he alone is not going to get the job done . Closer .....but no cigar .

Still need that person capable of 25 and 12 you can count on pretty much every night .

Only one person in the NBA meets (just barely) your criteria.

for the shot attempts sully gets in this offense, is the upgrade worth it? is it even an upgrade? where do sully and horford rank in the league? I know Horford is probably ranked somewhere around 10 - 15 for PF's but I just don't see the offense changing much because of him.

that and Horford just has never really wowed me. I suspect we probably won't get our money's worth out of him.

You might want to rethink those rankings.

Plenty of guys are capable of going off on any given night.

Sign Horford to the max for 3 years without giving anything up ... that would be a major victory.

Go ahead and use the war chest of assets to add that top guy while holding onto IT, Smart, and Crowder, and suddenly you've got your #1, an excellent #2, an All-Star scorer #3, and a tough supporting cast.

I dunno who that top guy would be though.

Count me in the 3 year camp if that is at all possible.  Horford is a good player, but I am not sure I would count him as a difference maker.  I guess it is a solid upgrade to our front line, but I wonder how much it really moves the needle.

As the season goes along, and our core young guys keep improving, I really find myself wanting DA to keep this group together unless we can trade for an elite player.  I like Horford, but I don't think he is elite.  He is one of the only all-star level players we have a chance at, but I just can't force myself to be excited about it.  Maybe his play will change my mind?

All this speculation about signing Horford for less than the 4 years for a total of $100+max is pure  fantasy. If you want him, that is what it will cost. With all the liquidity that will be out there from the cap raise, he is likely to get multiple max offers.

I feel the same way don't think he moves the needle much for us. I think he's overrated actually

He would be a upgrade over Sully.   He is a better shooter, better shot blocker and has won head to head matchups with Sully routinely.  The real question is whether he can maintain that at his age and to be honest with Sully playing harder and well during a contract year....

ehh, I really don't follow other teams at all. it was a guess, if he's higher I still don't know how much of an upgrade it is at the age he's at.

This is a cool comparison.  Ranks Sullinger at 18th and Horford at 12th among centers.  Sullinger is a better rebounder, Horford a better and more efficient scorer.  Sounds about right to me.

So Horford is better right now but  trending down.  Sullinger may or may not be trending up.  Horford is likely to make, what, twice what Sullinger will get?

I am not sold that Horford is what we need or will move our needle much.

The question for me is if Horford can play alongside Sully.  I think Horford playing alongside a strong rebounder like Sully is optimal.  Horford in my mind would take Johnson's spot but with an increased role, and more effectiveness.  I would try to keep Sully if we are bringing Horford on board.

Like I said before Horford IMO does not add many wins to this team. He's a 4 that plays a 5, common now I get that but he rebounds like a 3 so we would have to bring in a big time rebounder while Horford stands 17' away from the basket.
