Sitting around with some friends, the question came up, (and not counting Crowder as a big.) We were talking PF and C's.

I thought Orlando was in contention. But I have to admit, we're in the running.

I doubt it. Last year was worse.

I think it might be the Wizards.

Gortat is the only good one.

Dudley is the starting PF after the Humphries.   Nene is a walking injury.  Gooden?

The Hornets without Big Al.

And the Suns.  Chandler looks like he hit the age wall.

Depends how you define worse.

for example, Lakers and Philly would both be considered worse for 2 reasons:
- they have much less depth of in the front court than we do.  like our players or not but they're all legit NBA players.
- Their prime C and PF are 1-dimensional.  1 plays solid D but is useless on O and the other plays solid O but is useless on D.  All of ours are better 2-way players but none are as great on D or O as the other teams' players are.

No. We don't. We have extremely mediocre, middle-of-the-pack bigs. But they are not the worst in the NBA.

We have one starter and 4 legit 3rd big man guys right now. Depending on the team philosophy, any of Lee, Zeller, Sully, and Olynyk would be a 3rd big on a team.

Well, for whatever it's worth we have 2 "centers" in the top 20 in RPM (Sullinger and Olynyk, 11th and 18 respectively) and one top 10 PF in Amir Johnson.

Now, I'm not much into the use of this stat (I mean they have Towns at 39 for example), or calling Olynyk a center for that matter. But at the very least at a quick glance it should tell us that we're far from having the worst group of bigs in the league.

Factoring in the depth we do not however if you took every teams top 3 bigs and compared them the Cs would be in the bottom 3rd.

Another way to look at it: who's the best 'big' on the Cs? The answer is not great, no matter who you prefer. Virtually every team in the league has a better player in the frontcourt, with the possible exception of the Lakers and Pacers.

It tells you why Danny is eager to find a big guy.

Our bigs are perfectly fine. Not great, but fine. The much bigger issue is playmaking with IT out.

Agreed.

Lakers, Wizards, Hornets, Suns all come to mind.

Celts are definitely in the mix toward the bottom.  Not a single guy on the team who I trust as an everyday starter.

The good news is, if you look at the upcoming draft you see names like Simmons, Bender, Skal, Ellenson, Poeltl, Rabb.

Good chance the Celts end up with at least one of those guys.

All it takes is one quantity for quality big man move.

Just waiting for a quality big man not on the downside of his career to be available.

I still like our big situation better than Indiana's, even with Mahinmi playing well and Turner making some solid rookie appearances.

We've definitely got better starters and better depth than Portland, Charlotte, Phoenix, and the Lakers.

But point taken. Practically every night there's a big guy on the other team that makes us look overmatched.

We have better bigs today than Philadelphia... we'll have better bigs down the road than Dallas.

That's a fair point, Indiana's got a handful of guys I consider backup-caliber, as well.

I think the list of guys who could fit that description in the next couple years is something like:

Terrence Jones (if he can stay healthy)
Jonas Valanciunas
Kenneth Faried
Demarcus Cousins
Tobias Harris (if you think he's a big)
Derrick Favors
Nikola Vucevic
Greg Monroe
Hassan Whiteside

T-Jones in particular intrigues me.  Houston might hold onto him though.
