Thought we needed a positive thread after reading all the negative responses after last nights game.

The one positive I took out of the game was Marcus Smart's offensive play in the fourth quarter. Dude was balling until that airball. He definitely had that bounce in his step, when you sense something special is about to happen, after hitting those shots.

Just too bad the team wasn't looking for him down the stretch.

I want to see him play more inside out, use the 3 ball as the last resort. I think that is where his strength lies on the offensive end.

Smart is going to be a good one. He shows flashes. Just needs better shot selection, which will come. There were a couple 3s he took earlier in the game with his man right up on him. In a few years, I expect him to take it to the hole, step into a midrange jumper, or make the smart pass on those type of plays. Those are the type of plays that drop his FG% to a point that suggests he's a worse shooter than I believe he really is.

edit: here's a good analysis of Smart's offense by a fantasy GM in CBlog's DKC League (now moved to Reddit): https://www.reddit.com/r/dkcleague/comments/3z31pg/dkc_20152016_season_january_2016/cyqv7b6

Also that highlight offensive rebound out of Gasol's hands and dish to the back.

He needs more reps posting up because he's taking it to the rim against help defense and it's not working. Would like to see him rise up 5-8 feet out and hit the shot over his man instead of running it into taller help defenders. But I do agree. Posting up is a play that could work well for Smart.

Didn't see the game but see Smart was 3-11.  Please tell me I am missing something.

He was terrible until the fourth.

His offensive game in the fourth, however, was almost electric. Just didn't get enough touches after getting it going. He definitely showed some potential there.

At this point it's about consistency.

Smart definitely shows flashes.  I wonder if he'll ever really be a consistent player, though.  He was streaky in college, too.  His shot mechanics aren't exactly the best.

Maybe what he needs to find that consistency is (a) to stay healthy long enough to be a consistent part of the rotation for a while and (b) for Stevens to install a few simple plays in the offense that gets him shots he can hit in the same spots with some regularity -- similar to what Bradley's done in the offense.

They've been doing that a little bit with post-ups inside, but I don't think posting up guards is the best way for Marcus to develop an offensive rhythm.

I'm not sure Smart is ever gonna be the kind of offensive player who can just handle the ball and make stuff happen on his own, except in spurts here and there.  But I think he should be able to develop into a decent offensive roleplayer if the team sets him up well.

I agree. But if he can find consistency with that outside shot, it will open a lot more things for him on the court.

The positive thing is that he's playing smarter offense by mixing in drives to the basket as opposed to strictly being a spot up shooter like he was last year.

The negative thing is that his shooting has gone from below average to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. If he was even just shooting at last season's percentages, our narrative re: Smart's development would be completely different.

Agreed.  He also seems to more and more realize he can get up to the rim (he had like one dunk all last year until the last week or two when he had a few and he's had plays like that putback against the Lakers this year).  Hoping his shooting just comes around as the season goes along.

Also he is doing a great job passing I think.  Last night he was the only guard running the pick and roll with the intent of passing to the big if they were open (which they were) vs IT or Turner never even looking back.

Forsberg had a piece on Smart coming back go up today.

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/celtics/post/_/id/4721637/marcus-smart-shaking-rust-crashing-glass-after-missing-extended-time

Some nice bits:

Quote
It might have been more noteworthy if it wasn't becoming the norm. In the six games since returning from injury and while slowly ramping up his minutes, Smart has grabbed 12 offensive rebounds and owns the same offensive-rebound rate as Jared Sullinger and Amir Johnson during that span (only Tyler Zeller is grabbing a higher percentage of available offensive caroms in those six games, at 8.9 percent; Smart is at 8 percent).
As his health has improved, Marcus Smart's minutes have increased -- as have his rebounds.

It's one of a handful of numbers that jump out from Smart's stat line as he works his way back from a knee injury that sidelined him for 18 games. Smart, whose offensive game was a work in progress even before the injury, still shows offensive rust, shooting a mere 29.8 percent since returning, but he has balanced that with a steady hand (a staggering 12-1 turnover-to-assist ratio), dogged defense (Boston's defensive rating of 93.8 with Smart on the floor is the best on the team among regulars during the past six games) and a rather uncanny new desire to crash the offensive glass.

I like the Ast to TO.  I think Smart needs big mins.  IT has been way too selfish for my tastes lately.  I say that as someone who will defend his shot selection and some others on the team because our team does need to force the issue from some players.  But Smart is the only guard trying to run a team offense and his defense is of course a game changer.

See, I think you take these as positives, and look to build on them slowly. Don't overplay the kid -- let him get better physically and mentally by building up to a larger role over time. Last thing he needs is another injury, so he can be asked again if he's injury prone, or his style of play is a problem.
