I don't think I had ever seen a play like this. Obviously extremely careless play by Sloan, but goodness, what an explosive play by Marcus.
Shame it was a bad jump-ball call. Would've been steal of the Celtic's season thus far.

Didnt understand the jump ball call at all.

Marcus has looked more explosive going to the rim lately. Is the game slowing down for him or is Brooklyn just slow.

ive been waiting for someone to do that for years.   Rondo use to do this all the time and I kept waiting for it to back fire on him. 

I remember watching some game in the early 90s and a ball was slowly rolling out of bounds in the back court... Dee Brown was very slowly following the ball as it rolled out of bounds... it was clear the other team had touched it...  Then the refs inexplicably said it was last touched by Boston.  I remember the commentator saying something like, "Welp, that's a lesson for young Dee Brown... should have just picked up the ball".    I kept waiting for something like that to happen with Rondo...   someone would grab the ball as he rolled it and he'd think twice about attempting it again.   Never happened, though.

i think it should have been a loose ball foul. After marcus got the ball the brooklyn guard (sloan?) swiped for the ball, only to hit Marcus.

  Pretty sure it did happen once, probably in the playoffs. Rondo was letting the ball bounce (or roll) up the court when the opposing pg dove for the ball and grabbed it. When he stood up and started to dribble Rondo stole the ball back so we ended up with a 5v4 and I think we scored. I'd guess it was 2010 or 2011.

Should of been a foul on Sloan, if the ref gets his head out of his cantine. Then the ref tops it off with a horrible toss to Sloans side. Ridiculous.

Yes, Rondo lets the ball roll too much, but he has also made the play that Smart made before. Nothing too special. Still nice hustle though.

NO way that should have been a jump ball---and then have the ref totally GIVE the ball back to Brooklyn with that horrible (on purpose-?) toss.

The entire game looked rigged to me---how about that double dribble they called on ET--?

Refs were shaving points or something in this one----AWFUL--!!

The advantage of keeping the clock stopped is so huge that Rondo getting the ball stolen a third of the time would still be fine.  This is an absurd fixation.  Rondo just did it more because he was much better at it than other guards.

Marcus is actually traveling, as you are not allowed to roll on the floor (to gain an advantage) or attempt to stand up while holding the ball. The former is definitely an NBA rule (check it out before flaming me), the latter might be FIBA, as I haven't seen it in the NBA rule book.

He may have been travelling but they should not call a jump there.   The other guys hands were not even on the ball.   This play was great but it serves notice why he is so injury prone with aggressive reckless play.

That was one of my favorite plays of the whole year.  Smart looked like an animal jumping at his prey.  I had to rewind that one about five times.

And I remember Charles Barkley doing the opposite once (though I can't find a clip, I remember it from one of those late 80's/early 90's NBA VHS tapes like NBA Superstars or Hardwood Heroes or something).  He was rolling the ball up, and the defender was threatening to make a move for it, and Barkley kind of faked lunged at the defender (you know, like when somebody tries to make you flinch, basically threatening to tackle the guy if he dared make a move for the ball).  Though I may just be misremembering that one.

Still an awesome play by Smart.

Loved the effort there by Marcus and also agree about the terrible jump ball call (and toss). This is one of those plays that makes him such a unique player. I guess there are some here that think it was a travel (?), but it's not like he got up or started rolling around uncontrollably. If you grab the ball on our stomach, I think you are allowed to get to a seated position, just not stand up.
