40 points in the second half against the Raptors!!   ;D

He's a great defender who gives max effort at all times.

Yes, I would trade the #1 pick for him.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
This goes to show how most posters here just want to watch the Celtics for entertainment and would be completely willing to trade Joe Johnson for Roger and Delk again, if we made the ecf.....with no shot at winning a championship

That was just poor talent evaluation, though. Reportedly, the Suns would have been just as happy with Kedrick Brown, but we wanted to keep him instead. Obviously that trade would have been just fine.

Also, all the moves we made ended up leading us to an NBA championship so I am not too unhappy with how things ended up (there is no guarantee Johnson gets us there).

As for Butler, he is pretty awesome and I would LOVE to find a way to bring him here. If getting him guaranteed that another all-star level player would sign here, you have to make the proposed trade.

The correct answer is yes, make the trade.

Jimmy Butler is a superstar, and yes, a top 10 player. Simmons *could* be even better, but it isn't likely. In order for that to happen, his shot needs to develop into a threat, and his slashing game needs to translate. He could easily end up as a PF version of John Wall, which is pretty good, but nowhere near worth passing on Jimmy Butler for.

Heck no.  You can net a flat out better player than Butler using a #1 pick.  Especially with Ainge and his trade skills

I think you're underrating Butler. There flat out aren't many players better than him. And it's tough to predict who will develop well and who won't - even if you guarantee that someone in this year's draft will be better than Butler (it isn't guaranteed), you won't necessarily pick the one.

Yes. Draft is a crapshoot. You could end up with Anthony Bennett.

Butler is excellent but I think I'd take the actual John Wall over him.

Yes. Draft is a crapshoot. You could end up with Anthony Bennett.

Or you could net an MVP caliber player, which Butler is not.

Just a brief aside to this trade proposal that will never happen: Am I the only one concerned about Denver and Phoenix sitting there with 12 wins and Denver on a 6 game losing streak and Phoenix on a 9 game one? Minnesota and New Orleans have 12 and 11 wins respectively but I'm more confident in their ability to win enough games. Phoenix, in particular, is a simmering dumpster fire that could explode into a season long disaster. Brooklyn has 10 wins but no incentive to tank for the next three years. I'm worried about the devaluation of our Nets pick which makes our losses to them even more annoying.

If Simmons withdraws from draft

And this trade is straight up
Then yes

Other then Simmons, no other player has shown that guaranteed star talent
Ingram is close
But the others have high bust potential

Actually the percentages say otherwise.

I've decided to pick the famous 1984 draft but its round about this time draft picking becomes a science. In 32 drafts, 23 players have been all stars or All NBA (excluding Wiggins and Towns who are going to be all stars), there are 3 HOF's confirmed and at least 9 future HOFers. Out of the 32, the only true busts are Joe Smith, Olowokandi, Kwame Brown, Andrea Bargaini, Anthony Bennett (as I don't count injury problems as a true bust but more bad luck).

Out of the 5 busts; Clippers, Wizards, Raptors, were 3 of the 5 and they were/are historically incompetent.

That's a 5/32 bust ratio, which I'd take any day over a very solid player who has only really had 2 good seasons.

After scoring 40 in the second half two nights ago, Butler has 32 points and 10 assists last night.

I still say YES...trade the #1 pick for Butler.

What's not to like?

I know you said you take injuries off for bad luck but I can't look at a #1 pick bust list without Greg Oden on it.

I did post on here awhile ago that looked at the pre-draft unanimous or near unanimous selections from the last 25 years or so and in all but pretty much the Iverson draft (Kobe - a high schooler before they were chique) and Oden (who was injured), the player that went #1 was the best player in the draft and the worst career was Kenyon Martin (who was a solid all star level player for a number of years before he got injured again).  It is the years when there isn't a near unanimous #1 where you get the total busts.  In fact, I think in only one of those years the player that went #1 was even a top 5 player from the draft.

If everyone who "matters" says Simmons is the only guy to take at #1, he will most likely be the best player in the draft.  He might not be Lebron James or Tim Duncan, but he probably will be at least as good as Kenyon Martin (pre-NBA injury).

You don't trade that for a player like Jimmy Butler as you expect to get a franchise player and not just an all star (i.e. Butler).
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Of course you do, but the Bulls easily say no. He is their future not Rose.
