This thread insane. Lee is saying exactly what any player should say: he's not complaining; he's just telling his coach he wants to be a part of the rotation and is inquiring how to do it.

why does he have to inquire? How long has he been in the league?

The truth is, his contract is going to up and he wants his next payday.  In addition he feels he has done x , y , z to be given automatic mins over younger guys like KO, Sullinger.  When in reality, overall he has been outplayed by KO, Sullinger on both ends

CBS does not need Lee or anyone else to tell him how to run the team/rotation.
Your job must rough if you can't discuss your career with your manager.

Lee didn't tell anyone how to run the team. He is trying to figure out what he needs to do to get more minutes. He may never succeed in that goal, but there is nothing wrong with trying.

On the other hand, I've never been a fan of Lee's game.

the answer is , play better.

Lee: Coach what do I need to do to get more min
CBS:  Do I seriously have to tell you?

CBS known as a nice guy probably thought that in his head.  Because that is the ONLY answer. Not grow a beard. Or run 50 more laps.  Or start following the Redsox.   Play better on both ends.  Make your shots. Learn to make a jump shot. Learn to make a three pt shot.   Kill yourself under the basket for the rebound if you have to

He is not getting nasty enough under the basket to grab rebounds.  I don't even know how he was such a good rebounder earlier in his days.   Unless he mainly relied on his "youth"

And unfortunately if "youth" is not on your side, just go with the flow.   Do what you can, with the mins you are given.

Once again, you've missed the part that in his limited minutes, Lee is playing within his career averages if you adjust it PER 36.

You said make his shots, he's making 51% of them, taking 5 shots per game. What, do you want him to average more than 6 points? Well, he needs more shots, but he can't do that if he's not playing.

You said he needs to be nasty with rebounds. Again, he's rebounding rate is very close to his career numbers. How much rebounds do you want him to average in 15 minutes per game? Even last year when he's rarely playing with the Dubs, his rebounding is within his career averages.

If you want the old double-double David Lee, you need to give him playing time, because he has proven his entire career that he can do that if he's provided to sniff the court 30 minutes per game, and his adjusted numbers suggests that he can do it with ample court time.

And there's nothing wrong with asking your coach as to what to do to earn more minutes. David Lee has been producing within his career averages, so clearly that's not the problem. Surely there are flaws in his game which is why he's not playing more. But that's why he's asking the coach, to figure it out.

I'll use this analogy for you. If you're a cook, and the chef only wants you to cook beans, even though you can cook more than that, you don't just silently cook the beans better and expect a promotion, you do that, and ask your chef what else can you do to be able to cook other dishes. That's what David Lee is doing. He's not being a brat, or complaining. He's figuring out how he can stay on the floor longer, to be able to help the team.

I fell like you just want Lee out of the lineup so your boy Jordan Mickey gets the spot. I really do. I think that's the only reason you're hating on him so much.

It didn't sound like he asked in that way.  HE said it from his mouth, he expects 20-25 mins a game.    That is like a standard of mins he expects.

Instead he could of said, I been talking to coach, so we can figure out a way to help my game grow. Not worried about the minutes. As long as I play better, they will come. The team comes 1st

NOT I expect 20-25 mins.  No knock on the other big guys yadi yada me me me talk.  Because it is a knock on the other guys no matter which way you spin it. I mean Zeller has played like 5 mins on avg and I haven't heard him complain once. KO , Sullinger, these guys haven't complained a second when Lee started in the beginning of the year.

Leee might give you the stats per 36 min, but also is a negative is many areas of the  "non stats" departments.   And basically he is a very poor fit under CBS system.  Like he was a poor fit under GSW system. He can't spread the floor nor is not a versatile defender

And Mickey on the other hand can do both of these things.  Yes i want to see this skilled young gun get his chance. Because he will "fit" and add shot blocking/front explosiveness elements this team can use

And Mickey spreads the floor and a versatile defender? If he's really as good as you think he is, why is he still in the D-League. Surely he practices with the main roster, so he should be showing what he can do. Clearly CBS and Ainge hasn't seen enough from Mickey to get main roster minutes. Also, Lee may not be able to stretch the ball, but he passes better than Mickey, which makes his fit better because he can move the ball from the top of the key, or from the post.

Also, read the article, and the quote. He said "MY GOAL IS TO BE A GUY WHO'S PLAYING 20, 25 MINUTES". In which part of that article did he say he "expected" the minutes? Oh, yeah, it wasn't there. It was just you.

Lee said he met with Stevens a few weeks ago and asked the coach how to earn more playing time, expressing his desire to be a bigger part of the rotation.

If that sounds like complaining to you, then I'd hate to be your boss. Because if I go to you and ask you what I could do to earn a raise, NOT DEMAND, but ask what I could do, you'd think of me as petulant worker and will probably fire me for it.

Yeah, Zeller never went to Brad about how to earn playing time, but maybe he should. BTW, he also doesn't fit the CBS system (can't stretch the floor, doesn't give you the "non stats"), so why only hate on Lee? Is it because Lee, the veteran, knows how to communicate to his coach?

I don’t accept [it], it’s very frustrating, and the moment you start to accept it is when [you’ve] kind of stopped trying,

Did he say he's frustrated about his lack of playing time? Sure. But did he demanded to get more, nor did he say he expected PT when he got here? No. Also, read in on that final sentence will you. That should tell that he's willing to work, not demand, for minutes. He just asked CBS as to what else he could do to earn it, he didn't go to him and say "I need floor time", that's just you.

This is the same thing he was saying last year with the Warriors. The same exact thing. He never complained about playing time, but was quoted in saying he was frustrated by the lack of it. He was an All-Star year two years ago, and averaging 19-10 the year after, and the only reason he went to the bench was because he was injured. Dray Green proved to be a better fit for sure, but while he was quoted saying he wanted to play more, he never openly complained, nor asked the Dubs staff to put him on the court more, and his sacrifice paid off with a ring.

He's not complaining, give it a rest.

I have yet to honestly see Mickey make an impact in an NBA game, so why would we give the keys to a player that hasn't done jack squat yet?

Lee/Zeller as Yoki said, doesn't fit into our team, but I'm optimistic Sully/KO can hopefully get it together.

At the end of the day, you get players that buy in, and can do well in a team environment. Yes you need superstars, but you also need role players that can have faith in a system.

Its hard to find players like Lee, who work hard, and never ever seem to break down or become frustrated.

He's not complaining, give it a rest.

I can't give this post enough TPs...bravo!

I have yet to honestly see Mickey make an impact in an NBA game, so why would we give the keys to a player that hasn't done jack squat yet?

Lee/Zeller as Yoki said, doesn't fit into our team, but I'm optimistic Sully/KO can hopefully get it together.

Quote

He doesn't see it. To him, Lee asking how to earn minutes = Lee being a brat and complaining about minutes. I think this is a debate we won't win, because he's clearly fixated by that flawed logic.

D Lee and Amir have not been the upgrades they were supposed to be. But especially not Lee

Are you watching the games? Amir has been pretty good. Certainly an upgrade over Bass, and I liked bass' game too.

Do you guys realize how foolish waiving Lee would be?
1. He's not really complaining. Saying you want to keep trying and get more minutes is not really complaining.
2. If we waived him and at the deadline there was a deal to trade picks for Melo or DMC or Durrant we would then have to trade Amir to make the numbers work and Amir is really helping us win.
3. If we waive Lee and 2 or 3 bigs get hurt we would be in trouble.
Saying Amir is an upgrade over Bass isn't exactly setting the bar real high

I'm not setting any bars, I'm just refuting a silly comment that you made. You said Lee and Amir were not upgrades over wallace and Bass which is just wrong. But I got to love the negativity. So you clearly don't like Amir and Lee and didn't like bass either. Guys like Amir and Bass play a role and play it well. just because someone isn't a star doesn't mean they are not good.

I've gotta say, nothing I've seen so far this year makes me glad that Ainge traded for Lee or signed Amir.

If those contracts are ultimately used to help make a big trade work, it'll make sense.  Otherwise, I still believe it'll have been a waste.  I'd rather see Zeller and Mickey getting more playing time, even if the team were a bit worse.

I think its a result of playing other players like KO/Sully more. Lee shouldn't play, because he doesn't really have much of a future on this team. But if we're planning on winning games, its important to insert Lee for the occasional match up.

Well, some people are just very fixated on rookies, and their potential. I sometimes have issues with it too.

My roommate argued that D'Angelo Russell could've made the complicated and tough behind the back, no look pass Rondo dished out to Marco Bellini inside the teeth of the OKC defense. I almost choked on my beer.

If those contracts are ultimately used to help make a big trade work, it'll make sense.  Otherwise, I still believe it'll have been a waste.  I'd rather see Zeller and Mickey getting more playing time, even if the team were a bit worse.

I really like those guys so far, particularly Amir.  Amir's contributions have been of the kind that don't show up gaudily in the box scores.  He really is a good defender, good pick setter, good floor runner, the kinds of little things that help teams win.

Lee hasn't been great, but I actually think he's been a lot better than many on here are giving him credit for.   He's almost always aggressive on the offensive end.  I think the bench needs that aggressiveness from him.

I guess I can see how if you don't care about wins you wouldn't care for those guys.  I happen to like wins, and I like Lee and Johnson as additions to this team.

He deserves mins
He's the only all star on the team and has shown on some games that he has it offensively despite being terrible at defense

But it's best for the team to keep the young players playing
Rather than let a good vet take their playing time for a season and then leave after this season

I didn't like the acquisitions when they happened, because of the philosophy that seemed to be behind it.  I made that clear, as you know.

I was willing to accept it, and even get excited about it, if adding those guys made the team significantly better.  So far, it doesn't seem to me like their addition has made a big difference.  As I feared, their presence has contributed to younger guys who might have a future here getting shuffled to the bench.

So yeah, if all adding Lee and Amir gets us is a handful more wins that won't make a dang of difference toward actually competing in a playoff series ... I'll call it a waste.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

TP to Yoki for a great take on the situation. In some ways I think this is Lee setting an example of how to act and interact with the coach in this situation. It's part of him being a mentor to guys like Zeller and KO who are in a similar situation. He is going about it very professionally.

On the subject of Mickey, he seems to be progressing really well and certainly looks like he will have a big future with this team. I don't see the need to rush him though. In Maine he has an excellent opportunity to work on his game and get the minutes he needs to do so. He gets the time to work on new aspects of his game like the 3 pt shot. In Boston he would be the 4th big most likely and would see at most 10 mins a night. Let him grow and develop so that when the time frees up he'll come in ready to tear it up.
