Why do Luke Walton coached wins count for Kerr?

So Luke Walkton just won Head Coach of the Month and has never won a game as a head coach in the NBA. What planet am I on?

It's pretty dumb, isn't it?  Maybe Kerr will demand a raise due to his perfect record this year.  The guy has been amazing!

It's also stupid that if an interim coach was doing horribly, those losses would count against a coach who is out. I get the reasoning, but it doesn't make any sense at all.

I mean, I get it if a coach is suspended for a game, has a family emergency, etc.  But you'd think they could set a threshold for consecutive games coached where the wins (and losses) start counting for the replacement.  I know they didn't want to mess with Nellie's record retroactively, but certainly 20 games of coaching a team should be enough to qualify, no?  I mean, what happens if Kerr doesn't come back the entire season, but they still keep the interim tag on Walton? There has to be a point somewhere.
