C's are over the cap but under the luxury tax.

Do salaries have to match in all trade scenarios or only if the other team is also over the cap?

Unless we were getting a star back, I am assuming that we would only want an expiring contract back, right?

We're over the cap so we can't take back more than 125% value in a trade.

I'd think that in any trade we'd want to avoid going over the luxury tax.  Don't know off the top of my head how close we are.

Ok, but can we take 0% salary back, i.e. could C's trade D Lee straight up for a 2nd round pick?

Just to put some $ out there:

70 mil = salary cap

77.5 m = C's salaries counting P Jones & Z Dragic

84.7 m = luxury tax line

Yes, if another team has cap space to absorb Lee's deal, they could trade David Lee for a top-55 protected 2nd round pick.

With how Lee looks I don't know what we could get for him. I think he could be included in a deal for a star if the star makes a lot of money or if a team wants to attach a bad contract to the star deal then Lee would come in handy.

I don't see a team trading for him as a rotation piece if he can't be a rotation piece for us (which I think will end up happening)
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I suggested this trade about a week ago that I think the Hornets would only consider if they are completely out of the playoff race and we are in.

Offer the expiring contract of Lee, and a lottery protected first for the expiring of Al Jefferson for our playoff push.  If things look good maybe resign in the offseason.

This is incorrect.  As long as we are not over the luxury tax post-trade (which we wouldn't be barring additional transactions), we can take back Lee's salary plus $5 million, so $20,493,680.  The 125% rule kicks in only if you're over the luxury tax post-trade, and we have nearly $8 million in clearance for that.

So any team willing to take on D Lee's expiring 15 mil contract will want a good draft pick (or so) from us.  And if we are going to trade good draft picks, we will need a lot in return.  So the odds of a D Lee trade deadline deal are very slim - right?

Where did you get the $5 MM number from?

I agree with Pho we can take back up to whatever we are sending out +25%

I think Lee has more value to this team then Zeller. I do agree that he's been a disappointment so far, but he's still our fourth best big. We shouldn't trade him.

Also, he didn't play much last year. He might play better after some more reps.

From Larry Coon.  Where else?  Question 84 on the FAQ. (It's in a table form, so doesn't copy well, but feel free to go look.)

From Question 84 of Larry Coons' FAQ:

Quote
Non-Taxpaying Teams

Outgoing salary                   Maximum incoming salary

$0 to $9.8 million                  150% of the outgoing salary, plus $100,0004
$9.8 million to $19.6 million    The outgoing salary plus $5 million2
$19.6 million and up           125% of the outgoing salary, plus $100,000

Huh.  Learn something new every day.

Thanks for the heads up saltlover.
