Could the Celtics Still Get Justise Winslow?

What if the Heat's starting five gels really well? Bosh is healthy, he and Dragic click, Dragic and Wade play well together, Whiteside has his head on straight, Deng fills in all the gaps perfectly and Justise Winslow shows flashes of greatness but hasn't put it together yet.

But...

The bench is a mess. Amar and Haslem are washed up, Gerald Green can't play D, Josh McRoberts and Mario Chalmers just aren't good enough.

Would the Heat consider trading Winslow for a good enough package of effective vets that could help this year's Heat team compete for a championship (and as many 2nd rounders as they want)? Or am I thinking crazy.

Of course, the hardest part would be making the salaries work for a 3-for-1 when the one is on a rookie deal.

I think you've outlined the only scenario in which this could possibly happen, but Riley is not Billy King: he's not going to destroy his future for a shot in the present. So, I think this is mostly wishful thinking, but the possibility does exist.

Edit: My response is sort of predicated upon the idea that Winslow would have truly shown 'flashes of greatness' in this hypothetical future.

Winslow hasn't looked good thus far and Riley might be out by the time he's ready to play. So I think Riley would make a "win now" deal, which is why he was so eager to mortgage a lot of their future by trading 2 1st rd picks for Dragic and then overpaying him. The Heat are eager to dump Chalmers so anything for Winslow would have to include him as part of the package.


Sidenote- Given the way Winslow has looked in summer league and preseason, coupled with the play of our rookies, I think there is no way whatsoever Ainge would offer that same deal again and is probably very thankful both teams turned his offer down.

You couldn't be more wrong. Riley is gone after this last hurrah, which is exactly why he would.

How does the Heat's future look? At it stands, they can't even deal a first round pick any year before the 2023 draft.

BTW, if Winslow doesn't meet expectations and can't crack the rotation, I'd definitely trade, like, Sully and Turner and some 2nd rounders for a chance to see what Winslow might grow in to. Easily.

However, despite struggling as a scorer, Winslow has managed to compensate with versatility, having gone for 10 boards against the Magic and eight assists against the Rockets.

He's going to struggle generating offense, particularly in the half court, but Winslow's all-around hustle and team-first approach could hold some value off the bench.

Haha, on second thought, you're probably right. A better way to put it would be that he won't get duped by Danny. If Winslow does show flashes (which I'm not certain he will), then we're going to have to pay for him.

I  think it is a good idea.  Hard to say it will happen specifically with Miami but this is the kind of trade that someone will make with us.  For instance how about Turner and our 1st round pick in 2017 for Winslow?  I know that seems like a low-ball offer but really it isn't bad for a #10 pick.  The value of these picks just got way overblown at draft-time.  This is about what this level of pick is worth.

Our 2017 1st round pick should be really good because we can swap our pick with the Nets.  I love Justise Winslow's potential, but I would not give up a top 5 (assuming Nets are bad again next year) pick for him.
