I'd say a collection of roleplayers plus Brad Stevens can do very well.  I am higher on our guys  though.  I think Smart is a stud.  Sully has potential.  Lee and Isaiah are borderline already there.  I also think KO is an above average roleplayer.  Amir is too really.  Zeller is not bad either.  We have a lot of above average roleplayers.  Bradley, Crowder etc.   Borderline to quality starters.  I'd say they are quality as 4th or 5th guys.  We have a lot of guys in that range.   Some better than others.  If Sully can become a 3rd wheel with the assortment of guys we have.

Smart is going to have poor games even in his 2nd year, but I think he will step forward this year.  I'm hoping Sully does the same.   Smart has top tier potential imo.  I think he is that good.

Up:
Smart
Crowder
IT
Johnson - hey, a big who can play defense!
Hunter - good feel for the game, high BBIQ
Mickey - don't expect much this year, but good potential moving forward

Down:
Olynyk - I still think he's valuable and could have a good upcoming season if not for the big man logjam.  Minutes will be scarce unless he impresses in training camp and practice.  And if he doesn't play much minutes throughout the season, I think he'll struggle in most games where he does see playing time.
Sullinger - a lot of people can lose weight.  It's another thing to keep it off.  Gotta prove it Sully.
Turner - big part of our success last year, but doesn't seem to be a long-term piece for our team.

Up Down A B A B Select Start (Indifferent/Lukewarm):
Young - still young
Lee - like the pickup, but probably not a long-term Celtic.
Jerebko - love JJ, but might have a difficult time making his way into the rotation if our roster stands as is.
Rozier - like his game.  Don't expect much this year.
Zeller - solid.  Great to have off the bench.
AB - one of my favorite players on the team, but not sure how much further he can improve his game.

If you consider up and down on how you stray from general consensus:

Up: Jerebko - I keep watching games to see what he has less than Sully or Olynyk and I can't find it (not to mention Bass); I understand the latter two are first round picks on rookie contracts that you want to value/see what they're worth, but bb wise I think we have our stretch four, no question...
Also what I saw from RJ Hunter has me hoping for great things.

Down: it's more of a frustration thing, because right now I think all our players are flawed but with good potential, if only they could play to their advantages.
But every time I see Olynyk pump fake, or Smart force a shot with 10 seconds on the clock, or Zeller  fail to contest an offensive rebound, or Young do anything, basically, I can't help thinking the time where we cut any of them loose can't be too far off - well, except for Smart, but I doubt he's as valuable as some people here think.

I don't think its my overly optimistic nature, I believe there are many reasons to be 'up' on the team. Amir and Lee, though not the super stars we may have hoped for, are quality additions. The draft pics showed enough in summer league to suggest they won't be useless and one or two may get significant game time this season. Smart should be better, Sullinger should be fitter and KO is still improving. IT and Bradley are both reliable at what they do. Thomas will average close to 20 points a game and Bradley will limit the oppositions scoring. I admit he (Bradley) may be inconsistent as a scorer and, like others, I am not sure he has much room to improve.

Young is the only player I can really see an argument for being 'down' on. That said, he is still young and though his summer league was ordinary, he showed glimpses last season that will hopefully become more consistent. I am less optimistic about Young than I am the team overall. While I am not expecting a championship, I think we can be close to top four in the East.

The player I am (admittedly purely irrational and forward-thinking) up on is RJ Hunter. I see a sweet shooting long SG with very good passing ability and court vision. The effort and understanding of defense is there, the athleticism will catch up.

If this vision of a SG comes true, we have the perfect compliment to Smart (another vision). Two pieces perfectly matched together.

I have no one in particular I am constantly down on. IT will occasionally p--- me off with his "I want to start" comments. Sully - with his inability to train himself into a better athlete. KO - with his soft rebounding. But I like all those guys a lot too.

Ah, I forgot about James Young. I am down on this kid from the moment he knew nothing about the Celtics when interviewed after the draft. Then came the anemic movement on the court.

I tell myself how young he is. He rebounds his position well. His shooting motion is obviously smooth. Still, I do not like Young and seemingly he will have no minutes to prove me wrong this year.
"We do so many defensive drills in practice, I come home and I'm putting the press on my woman, denying her the ball.
Y'all are laughing, but it's sad. I go home and deny the wing."

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Excited to see:

Sullinger- *appears* to be taking this offseason very seriously. It's a contract year and if he's ever going to look like the 20 point/10 rebound Zac Randolph kind of player we've dreamed about then this is the time.
Smart- I believe he could shoot 35%+ from 3 point land this season. His ankle's healed and he can hopefully show us his assertiveness attacking the rim/penetrating with his size and strength.
Rozier- quite simply, he reminds me of Smart without the size, but with more speed and ball control. His wingspan is enormous and I would love to see us develop an Avery Bradley type defender but with the ability to handle the ball and create his own shot going to the rim. It will be great for him to learn the pick and roll from Thomas and David Lee- two excellent pick and roll players.
Hunter this kid has serious potential. We were pretty blessed to get him to drop to us at 28 considering he has no injury history. The NBA should be a perfect setting for him to get the space and team mates to rain 3's and execute in the half court. His whole life he's been double and triple teamed and his feel for the game is uncanny.
Crowder- Although he's a bit of a late bloomer, I do believe he has a DeMare Carroll potential level of player in him- perhaps even better considering he's 4 years younger. If he can get the 3 ball up to over 35% then we've got a serious trade asset and good locker room soldier in general.

We just have a bunch of junk yard dogs and I love it.

Down on:

Olynyk- waiting to see him harden up and utiliize his guard abilities.
Bradley- same old same old. Not a starting quality guard in the NBA but he'll continue to start for us. Hopefully Hunter can break into serious minutes by next season.
Lee- takes minutes away from our youngins ie Mickey.
Young-has stunk, plain and simple. Can't see that changing much.
Turner- I've never loved Turner, not sure what he's doing on our roster, takes minutes and shots from young guys. Pointless roster member to me.

meh:
Amir- only reason I like this addition is because he helps Sully Olynk look better and teaches them a few things. Will hopefully give us an unprecedented defensive presence in this era of rebuilding.
Jordan Mickey-would love to see him but considering we have so many big men I can't see him getting any minutes which sucks.
Isaiah Thomas- I should be more excited about Amir and IT on the court together. I just don't know if IT is a trade asset or a player for our future. Something tells me it's the former.

Just wish we'd go super young and get rid of these role players that take minutes from our developing youth.
I can understand how having Lee and Johnson here will be good for our locker room and for our player development from a role model perspective.

"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Up on Sully , Rozier and Smart .....think they will surprise

Down......KO I don't trust to get mentally stronger.  His  body and shooting may improve.  Many great athletes are beasts on court , off they turn into marshmallows once the game is over.

Confidence  and tuffness is lacking in his game.  To be good defensively .....you have to have these .

I can't see him getting any better on defense .....he is not willing to bang heads and fight for court space.

KO .....is a consistent marshmallow

That ankle thing... I sprained mine badly on 13. July. More than a month later it is still somewhat weak and hurts occasionally. I haven't played basket- or volleyball since, but I am surely not driving it to the hole in the next weeks.

It is a frustrating lingering thing, especially mid-season.

Everyone's body is different, but high ankle sprains typically take a month to fully heal.

However, I don't believe it affected Olynyk for the entire season.

Think Sullys future looks more like big baby than Z Bo.
