Let's all just keep in mind that Doug McDermott and Anthony Morrow also looked really great in summer league.

Guys with great jumpers and deficient strength and athleticism often look nice in Summer League.

The question is, can RJ get open against NBA competition, and can he avoid getting torched on defense?  Can he hit shots with quality defenders in his face?

I think what separates Hunter from Morrow and Doug is his ball handling and passing. He's very good at making the right pass and shows signs of becoming a good secondary ball handler.

That's not a bad point.

However, considering he came from Georgia State, it is promising that he played really well in an NBA system against better athletes. Obviously, the fact that he not only succeeded, but excelled, is better than if he had struggled against d-league athletes.

Oh, and McBuckets might start to really contribute in Hoiberg's system.

RJ has looked a lot better than I expected him to.  I'm pleasantly surprised.  He already looks like he's probably too good to have fallen to #28.

I hope you're right about McBuckets, I like his game.

Hunter looks like El Debarge when he dated Janet Jackson about 25 years ago.  Can anyone post a picture of Debarge from back then?  You'll see the resemblance.

His style of play reminds me of players from the 70's. He is very confident with the ball. Not super athletic, but knows that he has the savvy to get where he wants. Really like his game more with each game.

I won't over do it because "it's only summer league" but I bet my BB reputation on this board by anointing myself Founder/ Driver / Agent of the Hunter Bandwagon/ Fan Club !!!
The last rookie to get me this excited was Len Bias!

Nice...in a way. Haha.

I had always assumed McBuckets is a pretty intelligent player too, with skill, like RJ Hunter.

But I suppose now that I've read up a bit on McBuckets...he's not a passer. But still, smart.

Coach's kids like Olynyk, Sully and RJ Hunter...and McBuckets... are a pleasant sight. Our kids being willing passers makes it even more fun.

Would be nice if Hunter got 5-10 spot minutes per game this year.

He actually reminds me most of Hayden Christensen.

I made the DeBarge/80's singer comparison a few days ago in a sl game thread. Too funny! :D
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

Can he hit shots with quality defenders in his face? No, his release is too low, he's not a good contested shooter (yet, hopefully...). But with, let's say, Thomas driving to the basket and kicking it out if the defenses collapses, he'll be perfect right away. So I anticipate him getting some minutes right from the start.
Can he avoid getting torched on defense? I think he can. He may not be fast enough to keep his opponent from getting by him, but he seems very intelligent, so I believe he'll find a way.
And I agree, his ball handling and passing will compensate his limited offensive contribution (if he doesn't get open shots) or some problems on D.

hunter played a zone at georgia just shows how quickly he picked up defense,at the next level will his low release be a problem? maybe but his ability to hit from deep will demand attention this  will really spread the floor--
remember when his arms just telescoped and he saved that toooo high sideline pass and then hit the three
hunter is the prince right at the moment

His low release is not a problem at all because he has such fast release.

I disagree to an extent.
I think he accelerates his normal release time when he has opposition. It's good that he's able to do it (and understands the need to do it...), but from what I've seen it dramatically affects his efficiency.
But it is obviously something he can work on.

If Hunter reaches his ceiling, he could turn into the next JJ Reddick.  I wouldn't mind that.  :-)
