He's a legit offensive player, 6'11", he's only 23 and was the best under 18 international player in the world.  He was even going to be the starting center for Kentucky until some weird benefit thing happened that the NCAA was being ridiculous about.  I think he is only going to get better.

Would have to agree. Yes he doesn't defend, but hes a good rebounder, array of post moves, and is still only 23 as you said.

I'm interested as long as we can acquire a defensive big to put alongside him.

Wretched Defender though.

Quote
Enes Kanter, Oklahoma City. I don’t know what the Thunder thought it was getting when it traded for Kanter in February, but… what… a… defensive… disaster.

Kanter can score, no doubt, and he looks like a big man who should be able to play the pick-and-roll. But he can’t. He truly cannot.

He either doesn’t know how or doesn’t want to or just has a supreme talent for doing exactly the wrong thing whenever his man comes over to screen a guard.

Kanter’s so bad that opponents basically just call pick-and-rolls when he’s in the game, and if you can’t guard the pick-and-roll, you are doomed.

Among centers who get regular time in this league, there are several really porous defenders–and Kanter is by far the worst. He’s awful. I don’t think there’s any way he turns into even a half-way mediocre defender at any point in his career, it’s just too far gone.

(Although his one-time Jazz teammate Al Jefferson has turned into a not-terrible defender the last few years. So maybe I shouldn’t be so hasty. What do they teach those big guys in Salt Lake City?)

OKC’s on/off defensive splits: With Kanter on the floor, the Thunder gave up 113.0 points per 100 poss’s. With him off (in the games he was on the team), they gave up only 105.1 per 100.

Utah’s on/off D splits with Kanter this season: 112.1 per 100 when Kanter was on the floor, 103.5 per 100 when he was off (in the games he was on the team).

That’s two teams, one in Utah and one in Oklahoma, with almost identical large improvements precisely when Kanter was NOT in the game vs. when he was.

One more stat: Kanter registered a -3.88 DRPM this season, which ranked him 469th out of 474 total players.

Oh, and that mean point I made about Griffin only collecting 35 blocks in 67 games? Kanter only had 29 in 75 games split between Utah and OKC. And he’s 6-11

Nice offense though

There's just very little evidence Kanter can play adequate defense, even as a center.

Absolutely right, he defends slightly better than a chair. NO

Kanter is obviously not a good defender, but he is a clear upgrade and is a real center.  He also showed what he could do when he wasn't hamstrung anymore averaging basically 19/11 for OKC down the stretch in the playoff hunt.  He is a pretty decent passer, doesn't turn the ball over, and is a good foul shooting center.  He also has fairly decent range.  I'd worry about him on a team where Sullinger and Olynyk are the PF's though.  Playing next to a guy like Ibaka is a much better fit for him.

Or Jordan Mickey?  ;)

TP, beat me too it. It's nice thinking that we might have an Ibaka type. If he develops that leaves a lot of options for a less defensively inclined center.

I like Kanter.  He is a skilled offensive post player.

I was thinking more in the lines of a long/tall 3, who can shoot it up(Tobias Harris might be that guy)......that would be a nice complement to Kanter's low post game.

As for defense -and to an extent - you can hide Kanter deficiencies by playing good team defense or playing Zone.  Not sure why teams don't use Zone more often like Dallas does...

Meh-nes Kanter.

So Chandler and Ellis don't interest you and now Kanter doesn't either??

Who will make you happy?

Kanter is a very, very good center but OKC will probably retain his services.

Seems like posters on Celtics Blog says this about literally every player in the NBA (Kevin Love, Carmelo Anthony.)

Love to know who's defensive skills are up to Celtics Blog's expectations?

Interesting risk to take. OKC are one team who might not be able to pay a max contract to their restricted free agent. Kanter has a lot of upside. He has struggled defensively to date but he has the tools physically to become an adequate defensive center. Good offensive game.

Definitely a gamble. An interesting gamble.

Gamble is the apt word.

I'm not sure if Kanter will ever be a good defensive player (just seems nonchalant and uninterested on defense a lot of times). I don't want a Amare/Barg on this team (first comparison that came to my mind i.e. good offense, bad defense).

Awful comparison.

Kanter is far better than Amare or Bargani.

Newsflash people, we'd be lucky to get someone like Kanter!

It's not like we can pick and choose which free agent comes to the Celtics

Especially when no one wants anything to do with Boston.

Then it's simple. We replace Sully and Olynyk. I am more concerned about getting Kanter to the Celtics, not what team "works better for him."

Or how about a big ol' YES?!!

I don't get it. Everyone is in love with Bismack "the stiff" Biyombo yet some aren't interested in Kanter.
