Be glad you aren't a Sacramento Kings fan.   Taking WCS 6th over Mudiay was insane.  WCS is supremely overrated.  I swear that kid and BIyombo are about even.  Mudiay might end up being the 2nd best player in the draft.

honestly you can't be mad.  This wasn't our draft.  We made the playoffs... we knew we were getting stuck with a dud pick.  Sure, I didn't anticipate that we'd use the #16 pick to take a guy projected in the 2nd round, but it is what it is.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
I just don't  know what people expect when your highest pick is 16.
how many 16th picks ever become starting 5 players?  How many become rotation players?
If you aren't gonna tank, this is pretty much what you get right?
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

Read that last line again. One more time.

Considering that Danny is usually good at drafting in the mid draft. I'm going to trust him on this one.

I would be willing to bet that Rozier won't come close to being the worst PG ever selected by the Celtics at #16.

They had WCS slipping as far as #21 right before the draft due to his foot injury.  Chad Ford:

Here?s the problem with replacing your front office right before the draft. Vlade & Karl had never seen Mudiay play. Mudiay > WCS

Boston didn't blow this draft.  They used a borderline worthless pick to reach for a rando point guard that people had projected in the 2nd round.  Not a big deal.  This wasn't our draft.  But selecting WCS at #6 over Mudiay?  That's the kind of move that can haunt a franchise for years.   We can't bellyache over potentially blowing a mid 1st.    Blowing #6 is brutal.   That's like using our pick last year to select Adreien Payne or something.

I do think WCS will be a solid defensive role player.  I see him as about even with Biyombo... who will also be a solid defensive role player.   I wouldn't have taken either as high as 6.  Either that's reflective on how poor this draft was... or the Kings blew it.  Granted, I think it was motivated for two very contradictory reasons:

#1 - COusins wanted WCS... so this might help heal the rift between star and team

#2 - If they move Cousins for a package of Russell + Randle, I imagine that WCS's defense would theoretically be a nice fit next to Randle's defense.  PG - Russell, SG - McLemore, SF - Stauskas, PF - Randle and C - WCS makes a nice young foundation for the Kings.

I am starting to wonder if Ainge has already decided that he's going to all out tank next season and that he's come to the conclusion that the only way the team will get good again is to land a top 3 pick.

This would sicken me but I am just starting to wonder solely based on what's transpired tonight.

That's what the Nets pick is for.

One more thing about the Rozier pick that really bugs me and I think others have mentioned.

If Danny liked this guy so much, he could've picked him at 28. I can almost say with certainty that he still would've been on the board. I looked at the mock draft on Draft Express many times leading up to the draft and every time I saw Rozier at 29, being selected by the Nets.

Why pick a guy you could've had late in the 1st round at 16?

And the other thing (as has been mentioned) is we don't need any more guards.

If DA couldn't trade the picks for value then at least address needs with the picks like a center, more athletic power forward and a scoring wing.

With the exception of Jordan Mickey, he didn't do any of that.

I'm becoming convinced that Rozier was not going to be around at #28.

Look, I'm not crazy about the draft, but some of the comments are just silly.
1, Rozier apparently had really awesome workouts and was shooting up draft boards. Its entirely possible he wouldn't have been there at 28.
2, we see college games and read reports on these guys. We aren't scouting them non-stop, and aren't in the workouts. Sure, Danny might have erred, but I doubt he didn't go with what he thought was the BPA. He's done pretty well on that front, so lets be wary of thinking we are so much better at evaluating NBA talent than our front office. You know, b/c we all have great jobs in the NBA doing just that.
3, we have PGs? I mean, I guess, but I would say Pressey might be our only real one. Turner is effective at it, but isn't really a 1. Smart is a better combo guard, and AB isn't really a 1, either. So its not like we have a logjam of legit 1s, we have a logjam of guys who play the 1. Not the same thing.
4. Yeah, Winslow. You need two to trade, and the price seems to have been unreasonably high, b/c we had plenty of ammunition to overpay a bit to get him. Do we really think others didn't try as well?
My basic point - its one thing to be critical, but at least put in some qualifiers. "Danny may have bombed this draft" is very different than "Danny bombed". We have so much less info than our front office. That doesn't mean we should blindly say they do no wrong, but we're a smarter fan base than most teams, and we shouldn't resort to "fire our GM b/c he picked a guy who Draft Express had much lower" posts. I'm not a big fan of our draft, but I'm not living in hyperbole land or anything, and I can definitely see how I could end up being wrong about it.
