Also...

Of course Ainge is going to deny it... If he said he would trade Smart, he's putting himself out there trying to engage talks, instead of gaining more leverage by being approached by GM's. Hes losing out on position of power and negotiations in trade talks, so clearly saying yes that I'm trying to trade my player would cripple the value of the player.

The only thing that matters here is getting the right pieces to build a competitive team.  Not concerned about trade rumors affecting the confidence of the guys currently on the roster.

GMs almost never confirm that they are willing to trade somebody, let alone actively shopping someone.  Means nothing what Ainge says or doesn't say today.

So Ainge is freaking the kids out and failing to build on loyalty, but he denied the rumor per your post.
