It really depends on Danny's drafting skills Golden State picked Curry in 09, Thompson in 2011, Barnes and Draymond in 2012,  and signed Iggy in 2013. Curry won 26 Games His rookie year. Green and Barnes Draft class took  Them from 23 wins in 2011 to 47 wins.

Smart won 40 games as a rookie, he's are first building block, not as good as curry obviously. We need 2 great picks this year. Do you like Are chances To reach. The finals by 2020.

In the next 5 years?  Very unlikely.  This summer is very crucial, though.   If we land LeBron James in free agency, we have a fighting chance.

I would like to say yes, but I don't believe so. Maybe the Conference Finals.

It is possible, I think it would take an injury to LeBron or him falling off at the near end of his career.

With the state of the east I wouldn't be surprised if any team in the East could rise up within the next 5 years if LeBron is out for the year with an injury.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

the only way this happens is if we land a couple franchise players in the next 5 years... I don't think that's likely.

No.

More interesting question from my point of view:

Will the Celtics have a core group of players in place by 2020 that could plausibly coalesce / develop into a contender?

I definitely think it's possible.
Considering that LBJ and the top players will be forming their own player-owned league after the failed 2016 salary negotiations and nba lockouts of 2018 and 2019.

The 18th banner will be raised on the backs of phil pressey and james young.

Of course we will in 2017, because in 2016 we will probably lose in semi or finales in the east.
Danny accelerated the rebuilding by sending PP, KG & RR, it's not to be contender after 2020.
You are so negative sometimes, I don't recognize the optimism from the past anymore. That's sad.
Just watch this summer and the next one and come back here and revisit your post. Thanks  ;D
PS: Lebron, who?

2020?
Yes, we can make this happen.

I appreciate the realism of some of the posts above but sometimes the negativity gets overwhelming.

5 years is an eternity, who is to say that it will Brad Stevens who leads the Celtics into the finals.Maybe he does the ground work and somebody else takes over for the next step.
I believe that the Celtics will make the Finals by 2020. 8)

Marcus Smart will hit a rare 5 point play in game 9 to beat the surprise first time finalists the London Rhinos to cap off a great comeback from a 4-1 deficit.Bill Russell will still be around to present the MVP award.

"I don't know.  I'm scared to answer" seems like a good option.

I'd expand it to "I don't know. I'm scared to think about it" because wow, 2020 is in 5 seasons and I don't even want to think what the league will look like at that point (besides the Bucks still paying Larry Sanders to sit at home and smoke pot)
I'm bitter.

Wonder what kind of results this poll would've gotten in spring 2007.  Things can change very fast in the modern NBA.

True.

Celts had Paul Pierce back then, though, and a top 5 pick on the way.  I think there'd have been more optimism back then, given those factors, and it would have been justified.

Actually, the closest analog for the situation the Celts were in back then would probably be the current Knicks.  While not a huge likelihood, I'd say the Knicks have a much better shot at making the Finals in the next 5-8 years than the Celts do.
