Dave Cowens was unique.

A 6'9'' 230 lb center who averages 15 rebounds a game without great length or athleticism ... not sure you're gonna see that in this league anytime soon.

Cowens was a great player from a very, very different era.

He wasn't very long, but I don't think there is a better athlete in the league today playing center or power forward. He was very quick, fast, strong, could leap out of the building and was tough as nails. He would eat Blake Griffin for lunch if he played today.

That was the guy who came to mind for me, too.

Again, Cowens was a great player.  I'm not trying to discredit guys based on the era they played in.  I just don't think you're gonna see another guy who plays that way be dominant in that way.

That said, I think it's generally agreed that the NBA was kinda watered down during a significant chunk of the decade in which Cowens played, though, due to drugs and the ABA taking some of the talent.

Kevin Love might be the closest thing, actually, given his dominance of the boards despite not having great size or athleticism.  But Love is an inch taller and at least 20-30 pounds heavier.  Plus he's got that outside game, and he's very clearly not a center.  Cowens was a far, far better defender.

The defensive ability is one reason why David Lee is such a bad comparison, IMO.

cowens led team in scoring rebounds,blocked shots and steals call him a center/power forward-this guy would play in any era-he gets lost between russell and bird era-

Dave Cowens, voted one of 50 best NBA players.  Incredible athlete, drive like few who have ever played the game.  Played against some of the best centers, in an era that WASN'T watered down unlike todays NBA.  Only comparison I can think of is Al Horford but more dominate in every way.

when the celtics last won the championship ala rondo, allen, pierce and kg Dave Cowens was asked how he thinks his championship team would have fared against the current celtics
without a moments hesitation he said "we'd run them into the ground"

very few current power forwards could run with dave in his prime
