The Celtics may have between $30-35 million in cap space to sign free agents. Do you go after one max (Jordan or Aldridge) and resign Crowder and Bass? Two max (Jordan and Aldridge)? Or 3 $10-12 mm players (J McGhee, J Lin, Wesley Matthews)?

Do C's FA's resign thier own FA's and use TPEs to pick up (via trade or S&T) a player up to $12.9mm (Noah? expires next yr) value and another up to $7.7mm value (welcome back Gerald Green)?

I placed * next to those who may not receive their level max contracts.

A= ~$22 million
B= ~$19 million
C= ~$16 million

Group A
*Monta Ellis
*Tyson Chandler
*Al Jefferson

Group B
Love
Gasol
Aldridge
*R Lopez
D Jordan
*Hibbert
*Rondo
*Jeff Green
Millsap
Dragic

Group C
K Leonard
Monroe
Butler
D Green
*Kanter
*Asik
*Middleton

Go for butler and Leonard
If that fails don't bother with the rest

Well, according to this report that's exactly what they WON'T do.

http://www.masslive.com/celtics/index.ssf/2015/04/sources_boston_celtics_prepare.html

Quote
As this past season wound down, league sources told MassLive.com that the Celtics, if they cannot hit a home run, are prepared to offer what looks like an "overpay" to a second-tier free agent. The idea would be to acquire an improving player on a contract he could grow into. With the salary cap set to rise in unprecedented leaps and bounds, a deal signed this summer will appear very different in the coming years – especially if the acquired player adds to his game.

Part of Boston's goal this summer is to improve team depth with an eye on cutting – or eliminating – roles for certain significant contributors to the 2014-15 squad.
Set to have about $20 million or more worth of cap space, plus four draft picks, the Celtics could have ample opportunity to add, at the very least, multiple rotation players. Because of the exploding cap, the Celtics could potentially still be a free-agent player next summer even if they use all their cap space this offseason. They currently do have the assets to chase any star who does become available, whether it's through trade or free agency.

You should add a few guys to your list, like Matthews and Knight. Matthews in particular looks like someone that would thrive in Stevens' system and his injury likely means he'll come at a discounted rate.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
The premise of your thread is solid, but OMG on Mchee / Lin getting $12M.

Getting guys coming off of their rookie contracts would be ideal since their max is a little less 'max'. Any combination of Butler, Leonard, and Monroe (I guess) would be pretty awesome.

Middleton and Monroe seem like the most realistic targets to me

I don't think Monta Ellis is getting the max and I have to say I'm kind of intrigued by him. Think he'd make a great backcourt partner for Smart.

Great words from a great man

I like Monta too, but no 3 pt range from your undersized sg?  I've seen enough of that with Avery.

Add to that that he wants lots of money and he ll soon be 30.
Also, if he does opt out in the end, it will probably be bcs he wants a better not because he wants another team.

Khris Middleton is a big name free agent?
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.
