Well it would make sense if he's only looking for money, and I doubt that Danny would match a Max deal from the Knicks.
Here are two tidbits from the article:

Quote
Maybe the worst kept secret in the NBA is that Phil Jackson plans to pursue Detroit Pistons forward Greg Monroe in free agency this summer. In fact, one league executive called it “about as close to a done deal as you can get.”

Quote
It’s easy to connect the dots; Monroe’s agent, David Falk, is one of the few agents that Jackson has a relationship with going back more than 20 years when Falk was representing Michael Jordan. Falk is looking for a max contract for Monroe and the Knicks, coming off the worst season in franchise history, are happy to oblige.

Gasp! We probably can't compete with that. Maybe muddy the watters enough to get a good asset out of the Pistons.

I'd love to see Greg Monroe in the Triangle offense. Perfect match for team and player.

I think a shift back to the center position is exactly what Monroe needs. He has improved so much over the last 12 months. So close to having a major breakout campaign. I can see Monroe making the All-Star game in the next year or two. Very impressed with his recent growth.

I hope this (Greg Monroe to Knicks) happens.

So even under new management, the Knicks will continue to overpay mediocre free agents and treat them as franchise cornerstones? Great!

I don't understand the fascination with Monroe.

If someone had any illusions that a 24 year old Greg Monroe would receive a cent less than a MAX offer, then I don't know what you've been drinking.

Monroe is absolutely not a max contract player, but he almost certainly will be paid like one. Hope its the Knicks, not us, that overpay for him.

It's getting to be that season again ...

...you know the season where the New York tabloids have every available free agent and every star played rumored to be on the block going to the Knicks.

Oh wait, it's always that season.

So, in a league in which the salary cap will be increasing dramatically over the next few years you don't think Monroe would be worth something in the 16-17 million per by the end of the contract?

If that's the case, you'll never sign anyone.

Market value? Maybe. But why would the Cs want him? Guy needs and ton of touches to be effective, and he's an absolute joke on defense. Pass.

If they draft Towns, Monroe could work well.

It could also work if they get a guard -- Mudiay or Russell -- and sign a defensive big man to put next to him.

I much , much prefer to see the Knicks spend cap space on Monroe instead of a guy like Marc Gasol or Jimmy Butler. This would be a win for us if they sign him.

It is very unlikely that Gasol or Butler leave their current teams.  A more realistic trade off would be Monroe or Dragic.  Dragic, Anthony, Towns/Okafor would be a nice core to build around.

How long would it take for Towns to develop and learn to work with Monroe, and how old would Melo be by then? They will likely trade their draft pick for a vet, Melo's window is running out.
