Using fathers to predict a son's basketball prowess is silly. How did that work out for Jordan's sons in the NBA?
If it's silly to use any standard that doesn't work 100% of the time, than it's silly to use any standard at all.
Having a parent who was a NBA-caliber player doesn't guarantee success but it sure as heck raises the odds. Kobe, Curry, Kevin Love, Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, Horford, Klay Thompson, Gerald Henderson, Dunleavy, Hardaway Jr, Robinson III,, Jerami Grant, etc...it's a pretty long list for such a "silly" standard. Doesn't mean Sabonis will excel or even stick in the league but it definitely helps his case.
