Revis' deal with the Jets is a whopper. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports it's a five-year, $70 million deal with $39 million fully guaranteed, per a source involved.

If that's true, the Pats should ashamed of themselves then.  If they wouldn't go even just 1 million dollars more guaranteed, then this is on them.  But if they offered the same amount and Revis still picked the Jets?...then I guess you have to just chop it up to the fact that Revis was probably planning on returning to New York from jump street.  Really unfortunate...if they could've kept this secondary together for even just 1 more year, I think there's a Seattle-New England super bowl rematch

The deal is for $48 million over the first three years. That just isn't happening in New England.

Welp, looks like we'll be going back to the days of trying to outscore opponents.  We'll have to see where the final contract numbers are, what the Pats offered, etc. but if it's a case where they lost out on him because of just a few million bucks, then shame on the Pats.

Part of me hopes he planned on going to the Jets from jump street because it'll make things a little easier to take.  Yes the Jets need a quarterback, but with a whole new regime, an already established front 7, a new receiver to play with...let's see just what the plan is for QB because I think the Jets may surprise some people.  Let's not forget, for the craptastic team the Jets were even just 2 years ago, they still went 8-8.

What I don't know if I'll ever get over...it took 10 years to get a respectable, championship worthy secondary.  The track record of homegrown development in corners is just downright terrible, hence why they finally went out and got Revis and Browner last year.  So you finally have that secondary, outside of Gronk staying healthy all year, it's basically THE reason you won a title...and after a year, it gets completely torn down.  I just don't get it.

I feel your pain. It was great to have Talib last year, and it was great to have Revis this season. It's nice to get McCourty back, and maybe Butler can be a solid player, but no one on NE's roster is a Revis-level or even Talib-level talent. I'm tired of the Brandon Meriwethers and Kyle Arringtons of the world. Heck, we even had to put up with Arrington this season, and that was WITH Revis and Browner in the fold. I shudder to think what the secondary's gonna look like next season. It was a bright but fleeting moment in Patriots history to have such a talented secondary this season. Seems like it had been forever since the last time the Pats had that. Now we're back to a mediocre secondary to go along with a mediocre pass rush.

I wouldn't be surprised if we open the season with Butler and Dennard as our starting CBs...

Nah. Pats will be fine.

Miami and NJ just hamstrung themselves. Buffalo close to doing the same. All perhaps will get "A" grades for FA moves, all will likely do worse this upcoming year than they did this past year (well, NJ might win a game or two more).

In all seriousness, the Jets just threw a ton of money at Revis. Way more than the Pats would have given. There are even rumors that the Pats were out of the bidding as of Monday, but kept up the guise to let the Jets outbid themselves for the right to get Revis.

But you need to understand that NE couldn't have both Browner AND Revis.
They tried to make it work with Revis, but couldn't. Its clear at this point that Revis just wanted the money, not the rings.

He's definitely much more about the money—it's the only reason he would choose that terrible team. Like Julius Thomas choosing to go to the Jaguars. Choosing to play in Jacksonville!

Here's to hoping they bring Browner back. They'll certainly need him.

I hate this argument.  Why couldn't he have had both?  The money the Jets gave him really isn't that outrageous.  This isn't Aqib Talib we're talking about, we're talking about an all-time talent that transformed the defense overnight.  HE'S WORTH THE MONEY!  All of those legitimate concerns about no pass rush completely went away all because of this guy...and now they're back to having no pass rush and joe schmo back there at corner.

I wouldn't be nearly as upset if it weren't for their horrible track record at developing home-grown cornerbacks.  Since Asante Samuel, they have yet to draft and develop their own corners.  You see glimpses in their rookie years...Logan Ryan, Darius Butler, Alfonso Dennard...and then in year 2 they  regress immensely.  Heck even McCourty, people forget, he was pretty close to a lock down corner himself his rookie year and then year 2 came along and he was a train wreck so Belichick moved him to safety more out of necessity to save his career.

Maybe if they had somebody else as their defensive backs coach other than a guy who used to work at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, things would be better.  And no, that's not a joke...that really is where their secondary coach is from.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
TP for the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology reference  - that is pretty awesome!

And I do agree that losing Revis is a huge blow, but do think Browner was a huge reason why the secondary was so strong this year. If we can focus our attention on him, I will be psyched. Remember, he is the only player to win a Super Bowl each of his last two seasons...he doesn't suck.

He really INJECTED some talent into the pats secondary. His PERFORMANCE last season really was ENHANCING to the defense's overall lethality. It was like opposing teams were on DRUGS.

I worked way too hard for that one. Disregard.

The problem with losing Revis is that he really changed the entire complexion of the defense solely with his ability to take out an entire side of the field. Browner was a nice piece, but he's nowhere near Revis in talent.

Revis is a game-changer, and the game has now taken a drastic turn for the worse for New England. Even if they get Browner back, their secondary is markedly worse with player X in place of Revis, and his absence will also illuminate the lack of a superior pass rush. Add in the fact that the Pats kinda wasted a pick on the injury-riddled Dominique Easley and that Jerod Mayo has now been seriously injured twice, and it ain't looking good for their defense.

Well, I think that even after multiple injuries Mayo won't be worse than Casillas, which means that given we have Collins and Hightower, the linebackers will be alright. Easley will pretty much have to be healthy now that we've waived Wilfork.
