He's shooting .375 and averaging 10 pp36. If these don't improve, he's a bust of a 6th pick, even if he ends up a serviceable player.

Also, it's a fairly small sample... but in the 5 games in which he started, he's averaging 5 ppg, 5 rpg, and 5 apg in 30 minutes. Brrrr.

Lol...smh. Experts.

Great D, great rebounding, fun to watch, strong as an ox, can shoot the 3 and his biggest weakness is one of the easiest things to fix and he could  score in college.  Even though he can't score, he's still better than 3/4 of our roster right now too

He's a 20 year old rookie with less than half a season of pro experience. You might as well say "if he breaks his leg, he won't be able to play for a while."
Because it's a forgone conclusion that he'll improve? Quick, tell that to Melo, Giddens, and Pruitt.

He's improved since summer league, and now he's going against better players. Will he be a star? Who knows, but he can and has improved.

This doesn't exactly say much.

No, just folks with an opinion. I'd be terribly disappointed if our highest pick in years ends up being a Tony Allen.

The majority of Smart's attempts have been threes at 35%.

His defense is extraordinary.

He has a positive plus and minus.

We are winning with him starting.

Smart is an excellent player.

No, because whether he will improve or not is unknowable.
Obviously. All I'm saying is that this level of offense will be unacceptable, no matter how shutdowny his defense may be.
well thank you for clarifying what the standard is.

We're also winning with Brandon Bass starting, but that doesn't exactly get me excited.

It's been half a season, Smart can improve. His 3 point shot has been better than advertised and those players you've mentioned were late draft picks.

No doubt, but I was hoping he can finally be closer to the best-case rather than the worst-case scenario.

If he plateaud right now, he'd be around the 50th percentile of that list.  I think you're safe.

koz, why the rush to judgement on smart? in the past for other situations, have seen you post about being patient, how some player is young/inexperienced, and how some players develop at different rates.

next, you cited a few people that did not improve as if that substantiated your point, but did not mention a few of the players that DID improve? why the double standard?

it really is too early to judge. too rash to invoke 5 games as a starter as an indictment of a career, and too quick to argue at length that THIS 20 year old is not acceptable as an nba player.

how about we just wait and see before going into verbal combat on this one?
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Where am I rushing to judgement? I just said that the current level will be disappointing to me if he doesn't improve. Then some folks rushed to tell me that he's a "20-year old rookie with half a season of experience".

Well, that's all nice and true, but it's no guarantee that he'll improve in this particular area (or at all). Just look at Rondo.

I don't know whether this guy is going to turn into a superstar or not, but he is a heck of a lot of fun to watch.
