Specifically, what I mean is, do we need to give a max, or otherwise currently overpriced, contract to a player who could earn it now, before the cap shoots up? There have been several articles on how contracts locked in before 2016 will be a bargain, and I would be in favor of trusting our evaluation of players and chasing a bargain to make that into an advantage for us down the road. I don't see what else we can realistically expect to do with our space otherwise, other than perhaps rent it out for more picks/assets.

Obviously Jimmy Butler, and perhaps Dragic to a lesser extent, are legitimate max targets, but do we try to go after someone like 2013-2014 Jimmy Butler and hope he becomes 2014-2015 Jimmy Butler? What about someone on the DeAndre Jordan or Greg Monroe tier(s)? Should we go after a 'questionable' or '50/50' max player and gamble a little bit, counting on the cap shooting up to turn it into a team friendly deal?

We will be down to something like $36 million next year, are there any players you think would be good enough in the future to gamble on? Would you approve of Ainge (or if you don't like him, some replacement GM you trust to not make a huge, Gerald Wallace mistake) taking this kind of shot on someone he thinks may be worth it? Or do you prefer a more fiscally conservative approach, to wait for the sure thing a couple seasons down the road, a James Harden situation, and get someone in their prime and pay full value?

Hardest position to fill is the 5 man, Center.  I'd give DeAndre Jordan the bank, and build around the rest with your picks and/or trades.  It's easier finding players in the draft at other positions than Jordan's.  Especially with that many picks.

Smart
Bradley
Young
Crowder
Sullinger
Olynyk
Zeller
Jordan

Use your picks to fill in the blanks in the draft or trades.  Smart, Bradley, Crowder, plus Jordan is one helluva start to an outstanding defensive unit and gets you immediately to top 5 status in the East.

BTW, if Ainge thought Jordan was worth it for KG/Pierce and that trade, then he thinks he's worth it going forward.  He wanted the guy, and I don't see why that would change now.

No max contracts next summer.

Wait until 2016.

What should we do with our cap room? Save it? Sign players to non-guaranteed deals to be used in trades? Rent out space to teams looking to cut cost? I'm just getting into cap stuff and I'm curious as to what using it as a resource looks like.

In 2016 we will have plenty of competition from legitimately good teams, so we'll need to show we have improved quite a bit from where we are now to become a place the top guys will want to sign.

not interested in any upcoming FAs unless their last name is Durant or Aldrige

Only give a max contract someone who really deserves it.

No Kevin Love types. Someone who can score and defend.

I would considering this summer will be the last season before the new TV deal causes the cap to take a major spike. Getting a player now, even on an overpay, could end of being a bargain when the new CBA causes contacts across the board to rise. And judging by the way Ainge is clearing space, he plans on doing exactly that.

Good point. TP

That's a big deal.  There's no way you offer Jordan a max deal otherwise.

Paul Millsap.  Durable.  Good defender.  Great passer.  Adequate 3 point shooter.  Character guy/hard worker.  Reputedly a great locker room guy.  Career 50% shooter.  5 FT's per game.

4 years / 50M would be a bargain.

We have two power forwards already.

We need a center.

A lot of injury issues and we have two power forwards already.

He's averaged 30+mpg playing 70+ games.  Sully and Olynyk are completely expendable if you can get a guy like Millsap.

 ::)

If Ainge sits around passing up every FA besides Durant or Aldridge, he's gonna have one helluva time trying to assemble a team.

Not crazy about his age, especially considering he's undersized PF. These type of players don't tend to age too well. We also would be paying for past production instead of his potential contributions during the given contract.
