Was watching a knicks game the other night and this is what he said . He said he would rather have guys that play 100% the whole games on both ends than most max guys (Love types).  He also mentioned Leonard

These are guys I could see Danny going after and possibly land if he offers big money . I have to say I agree , unless its Marc Gasol, Aldridge types, I would rather have them.

thoughts?

Role players are pretty much worthless without star players.  But when faced with overpaying for a max player and right-paying a good player, then I would pay a role player fairly.  In fact, this comes down to being able to play players what they are worth as much as anything.

Oh really? Look at Hawks and how successful they are, Bulls without derrick rose, 04 Pistons, Spurs, Memphis, Toronto.  These teams should be our blueprint.  The key for GM is collecting the best pieces for a team and not just go after who appears to be most talented.  JVG was a former coach and he knows what he is talking about.  How many supposed max superstar players have ruined franchises: Carmelo, Deron Williams, Kevin Love, Kobe, and Dwight Howard.

SA Spurs are loaded with "role players." One lottery pick on the roster and he's 40.

The end of the rebuild need not be so far.

Butler, yes. Green, he's crazy.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Yeah, but non-lottery does not automatically mean role player.

Spurs last year bucked that theory. Hawks are doing it this year. A team full of good players can do very well.

Exactly.  I laughed.

I'd love to have a team of all underpaid players on the last best years of their contracts too.

Guys are a better value early in their careers. As they play longer, they qualify for larger contracts. That is how salary works in the NBA.

JVGs comments are also kinda stupid as he is talking about guys in their breakout year. In a year or two, there is a good chance he will be talking about how those same guys are overpaid.

Exactly. In other words, "I prefer max-quality guys making rookie money to max-quality guys making the max."

Agreed. That nugget was included for the "Why is Danny trading away the whole team for late 1st's and 2nd rounders that aren't worth anything - everyone knows you have to get lucky and win the lottery to contend, and how'd that work out last time" crowd.

But the team is filled with role players, including the so-called stars. That's why they win on the nights Pop gives his starters the night off. They play team ball.

Pretty much yeah. That said, Butler has been absolutely awful recently. Maybe those minutes are getting to him, maybe he's just coming down to Earth somewhat.

Some of these guys are playing with multiple hall of famers that always takes pressure off you defensively.

Great post. TP. I live in GA right now, so I was able to see a rare Cs game. Couldn't believe how good the Hawks looked without Horford and Korver (shooting lights out this year, in particular). Must say, though.. Teague is a stud.
