Elfrid Payton posts 2 triple doubles in a row

22 points 10-13, 10 assists, 10 rebounds, 4 steals

15 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists , 2 steals

averaging 16.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, 9.6 assists, and 2.2 steals over the last five games

He is putting up great numbers now, and still a rookie.

This is not a bump to rip on Marcus, but to exemplify Payton's predicted abilities.

I don't understand what the point of these dream/wish scenarios are. We don't have Payton, we don't have Labron, we don't have Bill Russell, and many NBA players. I get it, it's a way to create controversial conversation.

No one ever said Smart is the best rookie in the NBA, no one ever said he was the best pure point guard in the draft. We have what we have, until we don't.

Professional Team sports, is about pure talent to a certain degree,  ok yes, but also very much about team chemistry, team heart, team attitude.

I'm still amazed Elfrid Payton is allowed to take enough shots to score 15 points. He should be hacked every time he has the ball.

Disagree.

Smart is a far better player than Payton.

Then you might not what to do so in a thread you started titled "If I had a chance to trade Smart For Elfrid Peyton I would do it in a heartbeat". Just a thought.

Payton is putting up some nice stats right now, but it's not resulting in wins. The Celtics as a team are much better when Smart is on the floor. He impacts the game in many ways. Besides, I think Smart has a much higher ceiling than Elfrid. The knocks on both players coming out of college is that they couldn't shoot, we see tremendous improvement with Smart's shot in only his rookie season. Payton's still look pretty bad. While their defense were their strengths, and Smart is superior in that category as well.

I wouldn't trade Smart for Payton. There's only 2 players I'd trade Smart for in the 2014 draft class. Wiggins and Parker. Everybody else has either major injury concerns or major flaws. I'd rather roll with the guy we got now.
PHX Suns: Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh, Tristan Thompson, Trevor Ariza, Tony Allen, Trey Lyles, Corey Brewer, Larry Nance Jr., Trey Burke, Troy Daniels, Joffrey Lauvergne, Justin Holiday, Mike Muscala, 14.6

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
It's interesting to see Payton's development - if we had drafted him, we would have had the successor to Rondo. Payton and Smart will forever be compared (along with Exum if he can get his act together). I get the feeling that people who like Payton's game better really just loved what Rondo brought to the table and were used to his style of play leading the Cs. Smart is a different player without some of the stats, but seems to be just as effective

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Hopefully Boston and Orlando can become competitors [again - even though it was for a short period of time before].

In the little time I've seen Payton play I would say he might be better than Rondo at scoring near the hoop.  Both are bad shooters but I would say Rondo is a little better, and Rondo is the superior passer.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Peyton has had a few good games recently, and he's a bit ahead of Smart in terms of initiating offense. But Smart has the edge in tools, shooting, defense, intangibles. I think the Magic would trade Peyton for Smart in a heartbeat.

You would think given the similarities of their games, but I've seen guys here that praise one and [dang] the other. Go figure.

Agree with this though Payton's better with the floaters and Rondo with the H-o-r-s-e shots off the backboard. I'd put Payton behind Rondo, but with the potential to be better if he developed a shot. However, I think if you can't shoot from the line AND field, you have a broken shot, and not a bad shot selection [like Smart coming into the NBA, for example]. Also, I've seen guys like Rondo get banged up enough times going to the hole that they reduce the the number of times they drive and thus their overall game suffers. That could end up being a problem with Payton too since driving is the only way he can score.

This is typical foolish nonsense. There is a huge difference in what is going on with the two teams. Firstly Payton's Usage rate is much higher and he is allowed to do whatever he wants regardless it helps the team or not. Second, Smart plays within a much more rigid system and it appears that have set him a task of playing in very certain ways for the majority of the season. Just watching the games proves that they have him playing a much different game than he did in college. Payton is basically playing a much more wide open free wheeling game. Third, Smart has not played nearly as much as a starter and not as much period. Nearly 700 minutes less. That certainly effects things. Finally, Smart plays, Boston wins. Payton puts up solid stats on a losing team. A team that should win more than Boston honestly. I would say they have a better roster than the C's. This short sighted view after Payton has put up numbers in losing efforts is not reasonable.

Nah, I'll keep Smart, thank you.

As good as Elfrid is (and could very well be), I'll take Smart's grit over him any day.
