Also, what's wrong with getting high and couch surfing?   :P
Sloth? Um....everything.

As opposed to staying productive for the sole sake of doing something instead of of doing nothing? This is going to get very silly very quickly, I think.

In this thread, a bunch of people with a total inability to ever play basketball at an NBA level denigrate someone who has the ability to do so and has decided not to.

Adorable.

Doesn't that make perfect sense though? Most of us here are frustrated outsider dorks who can't fathom someone having this opportunity and being discontent with their job. I'll echo others and that believe he's seriously not right mentally. I can't understand how someone could pass up the chance to start in the NBA for 8 figures a year and be of sound mind.

I will never doubt anyone's ability to get sick of their job*. Regardless of the gig, regardless of the situation, gainful employment always has the capability to be a real drag. Is it any coincidence, perhaps, that we're hearing about this on a Monday?

*Doubly so if that job involves the Milwaukee Bucks**

**with exception for dealing with Kareem, filthy Laker though he is.
I agree it could get silly.

Let's just assume we're in a diner and you say "Larry Sanders is going to walk the Earth like Kaine in Kung Fu" and I say "He's gonna be a bum. I'm going to the bathroom. This isn't over"

Then some British couple try to rob the place but we stop them. Cue the surfer music

If he doesn't really want to be an NBA player, then he should quit.  If that is what he wants to do, it is probably making his mental state worse because a lot of people have expectations on him that he is crazy to walk away.

I mean he is a person too, regardless of whatever our (seriously disconnected and irrelevant) opinions of him are.  Good luck to him.

Pretty much. TP to you for the always amicable discussion.

Also, this thread has the first mention of Ma$e in like at least 10 years. What a throwback.

If Larry Sanders really dislikes basketball enough that he is willing to forgoe the millions that are owed to him then how can you knock him? It takes guts to step away from a lot of money because you aren't happy.

However, lots of people work hard at jobs that aren't they don't like and very few of those people are making millions doing so.

It's easy to say you don't want to play anymore when you have a ton of money, once his check stops coming in the mail he might change his tune. Sanders doesn't strike me as someone who carefully saved his money, so stepping away from his only source of income is probably a bad idea.

Pretty stunning.

I wonder what the issue is?
In all seriousness, it's always sounded like mental illness to me.

What an idiot.
It is a little idiotic actually. I mean if he just played out his contract he could build a lot of shelters. I mean the offseason is nowhere near enough time to establish such a thing. You really need to stop playing when you're like 26 or something if you want to do that.

His heart might be in the right place, but I have some doubts about his head. Never called him an idiot, but I'm not sure he has really thought this through. Probably just arrogance and ignorance on my part.

To  me I think it sounds idealistic. All he has ever known as a employee is the NBA. I wouldn't be surprised if his lack of experience in the real world (and how great basketball talents are coddled) gives him the perception that if he removes basketball he will get to do all the things he wants to. The fact is without basketball he probably doesn't have the opportunity to make a difference in the same way he currently is.

It's his life. So long as he formally retires and doesn't expect to get paid for doing nothing, I respect his choice.

Depends on what he decides to do. If he decides to be an EMT or something because he just loves that then great. If he wants to just go get high and couch surf ala Ricky Williams then that's a whole nother deal. I think it's great Ricky found Yoga or whatever and came back to the game and retired on his own terms, and I hope something like that happens here.

Why should it depend on what he wants to do?  So what if he just wants to sit around his giant house, play video games, and be a stoner?  So long as he's not hurting anyone, who are we to judge?

Maybe he has larger psychiatric problems, or maybe he's just burnt out.  He's probably been playing basketball nonstop since he was in his early teens for AAU ball.  Getting tired of something is not necessarily the sign of mental instability or a character flaw.  It's pretty common, really.

TP - this is basically what I was going to post. He is owed, what, like $33 million after this year? If he could just suck it up for another three years and four months, he could do so many more things than he can now. Hopefully he has put aside enough money to make the difference he wants to make.

I think it's entirely possible his 'advisers' will remind him of what he can really do if he just sticks it out a little longer. Now if he just wants to get on the ground and volunteer and help out as an individual, then more power to him, but he can really make a difference by playing for just a couple more years. He's done it this long.

If he has saved enough money and whatnot fine. I have my doubts that's the case and I'm allowed to have them. I hope it works out for him

It's very possible that Sanders has conflated "I don't want to play basketball anymore" with "I don't want to play basketball for the Milwaukee Bucks anymore".

Who knows, though; some guys get into basketball just because they hit the genetic lottery and are incredibly well-equipped to play it.  They don't really have the passion for the game itself, and the professional life tends to make that clear to them sooner than later.  Wouldn't surprise me if Sanders is one of those.
