I think that I would have rather seen Rondo walk, than take back garbage.  That #1 pick in all likelihood will be a non-contributor that just sucks up guaranteed salary for a couple of years.

not if you trade it

Not today.

Compare to his past deals, this is so not Danny Ainge-ish.

This is a deal Billy King would do.

No.  Billy King would've traded Rondo for Rudy Gay.

I didn't say the pick will "absolutely be a non-contributor that just sucks up guaranteed salary...".

It's just the most likely outcome, I think.  If we're lucky, we don't have to pay another team to take the bust of a prospect we draft (like we did with the Melo pick).

I'd like to know what the people who, astonishingly, are in favor of this deal will think after we get screwed in the lottery yet again this year.

I have been a staunch Danny supporter,  but I'm wavering big-time here.

The timing of this was such that it allows us to move the three stooges before the trade deadline. Silvergray lining?

Jameer blankin Nelson is the first to dump. His defining moment for me was when AB hounded him and literally almost had him crying.

Problem is he has a player option for $3.5 mil next year. No one wants him, so you know he'll exercise it.

I know! I cannot believe we are potentially taking back salary in this deal.  It's not like we got something for nothing, we got their garbage for our best player.  The draft pick, (like most of our other picks) is absolute trash, and no one is taking packages of late first round picks these days.

The worst part about this trade is that it should have happened two years ago.  I'm starting to wonder if the ownership is to blame here and not Danny, because you know Danny has been trying to move Rajon for a while now.  Maybe they kept him to sell tickets until there were no more options, because you know the ownership wanted "fireworks," and they needed Rajon to lure other stars at the time.

DA took the best of a bad situation and got a little something.  The return was meager, but it still better than letting him walk for nothing, or giving RR a max or near-max deal (which thankfully DA is too smart to do).  There was a lot of pouting and gnashing of teeth on CB after the KG/Pierce trade.  After the smoke cleared that trade was considered a master stroke by Ainge.  While this trade isn't nearly the coup that deal was, it will be seen as a move that was necessary to make when we look at this trade a couple years from now.

1).  Danny Ainge CREATED this terrible situation, and his 'solution' is even worse.  He sucks.  2).  The return was meager?

3).  The KG/Pierce deal is a masterstroke!? :o  WOW.  4).  This deal was a coup, all right, but for Dallas.  It actually feels like a hostile takeover in basketball terms.

You didn't like the KG/Pierce deal?  The C's got a great return.
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.

Well if anything, this just confirms that I wasn't off-base with my analysis of Rondo over the past few years.  Ainge clearly agrees with me.  He's been trying to dump him for years, failed because nobody wanted to give up assets, and ultimately settled for some middling role players and a late 1st.

So the team must understand that Rondo's impact is overstated.  The team must recognize that we've consistently played better without him.   They must acknowledge that ROndo doesn't fit into the style of system Brad wants to play.   They must realize we have better guards to build around.

The return is disappointing, but I'm already over it.  Much like Antoine Walker, Ainge realized his "star" player wasn't actually a star... and got rid of him so we could make steps towards the greater good.  I loved Rondo.  I loved Walker too. But both were flawed players that didn't fit into the vision.

No guarantee the Mavs are better with ROndo's ball-dominating.  I like that we have committed to a direction and are ready to embrace our youth.  I think in time, a lot more people will come to the realization that Rondo was a top 50 player with inflated statistics.

Roy H said it best, we could have waited. This deal would still be probably on the table by trade deadline, but it gives us some time to explore more and get a much better offer.

He settled, and looked like he had no idea what he was doing.

What if Rondo got injured?? Or Mavs trade for another vet PG like Deron Williams??

Rondo only ok'd to sign extension with the Rockets or Mavs.  That leaves us with little options

What if Rondo got a better return than this?

If your idea is realistic, so is mine.

The Mavs pick currently is #22. Your "in all likelihood" logic is just pessimism and curmudgeonry - by that logic the pick we got from Phoenix that became All-star and World Champion Rajon Rondo was "garbage".

Dude we have three picks, likely 1 top-ten and 2 in the twenties. Danny Ainge found Al Jefferson and Rondo late, Sullinger/Olynyk are not busts, Marcus Smart is promising, etc. I don't think it's crazy to assume with 3 picks in the first round, Ainge finds another gem.

When  will we be a contender again?  There is no light at the end of the tunnel.  If any quality player was to come to the Celtics via free agency the only draw Danny had was Rondo.  Now he has traded away the entire Championship team--started with Perk--then messing with Ray Allen's head - then trading the competitive dignity of PP, despite Paul begging to retire a Celt --and the great KG---Danny Ainge the anti-Celtic --  everyone of those guys owns more Celtic lore than Danny --  the faux businessman  with no loyalty and no sense of what being a Celtic means!

Why would you trust Danny Ainge  he is nothing but a buffoon pretending to build a team but instead destroying a tradition.      :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

My best guess is that Rondo and his agent may have initiated the process; Rondo hasn't been playing like himself lately; This might have forced Danny's hand;

Come off the ledge brother, it's gonna be OK. Danny Ainge was a big part of the 1986 Celtics only the greatest team in the history of basketball, I think he knows what it means to be a Celtic. Rondo was gone either way, it was time to move forward, it's time to get behind these young guys full force, they just might surprise you. Larry Bird wasn't traded today people, LeBron didn't just leave the Celtics,  it's ok to vent & be upset, but let's have a little perspective now.
