So, it goes without saying we all want to upgrade our Center position with a strong defensive anchor.

Omar Asik has long been on Danny's radar.   He is back to pre Dwight Howard efficiency levels (double digit points and rebounds, 12+ per 36 min) and is one of the best defensive centers in the league.

As far as I know, he is not signed beyond this year. Why not just wait and sign him in the offseason?

He has shown in the past that he will go where the money is, and we are a much bigger market than NO. As amazing as AD has been, given how tough the west is, he is as likely to make the offseason here. Since we are not competing of a title this year, why not wait, and throw $12M-$14M a year at him and see if he bites?

Not saying they won't try to resign him. I was saying we should try and outbid them, with cash/bigger market...

That is a very hasty conclusion.  As an unrestricted free agent, he'll definitely go where the best offer is.  Furthermore, New Orleans will have a choice between keeping Asik or trying to get a different free agent to fix their team -- they cant have both.  If they finish below .500 again, it should not be considered a guarantee that they'll just run out the same team next year.

If Danny is willing to pay the most, he can get Asik.  Of course, if he does, everyone here will complain that he paid too much (because no one seems to realize that for 95% of free agents, that's how you get them -- by paying more than anyone else wants to.)

This.

I am thinking - we overpay a little to get Asik - but we keep our assets (as opposed to trading for a center). We are going to have cap room and picks - but I don't see anyone close to Asik hitting the market - and no, Gasol is not coming to play for us. Not even Pau....

Actually, no it doesn't. We had the exact same issue last year, did you see any signing?

Since you're quoting me i largely agree, but I want to caution you to not count your cap room chickens before they've hatched.

I imagine that's the ideal plan for Ainge. Keep your assets and sign a starting center if possible. He'll have to make some cap space depending on who he targets, but there's a number of guys who I think would fit well (some more realistic than others),

Marc Gasol
Deandre Jordan
Roy Hibbert
Greg Monroe
Omer Asik
Kosta Koufos
*CB Miami Heat*
Kyle Lowry, Dwayne Wade, 13th pick in even numbered rounds, 18th pick in odd numbered rounds.

Gasol - seems to love memphis. Is on a great team and will get maxed out. Why leave?
Jordan - aint leaving LA for Boston..
Monroe - very talented, but more offensive than defensive center. Would be consolidation prize..
Koufos - good player, but would rather have Asik...

Possible to get both Asik and Monroe? ( sign one outright, s&t for the other?)

Like I said, some more realistic than others.

Gasol isn't leaving. Jordan may leave if LA refuses to offer him the max. Monroe may not be a perfect fit, but undoubtably a talent upgrade. Koufos is under the radar and will get an opportunity to start somewhere next year and will shine.

We have two first round draft picks, one of them in the lottery.
The 2015 draft is center heavy.
Draft a center or sign one, or both.
Or trade Rondo for one, which is what I would have done last year.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
NOP gave up a 1st to get Asik, they didn't do that to rent him for a year.

Beat me to it.

The only way to get him is to pay more than what NOP traded to get him, or offer him more money than the Pels will assuming he gets to Free Agency.

If they resign Asik at just $12 million a year, NO will be over the cap next season if Gordon picks up his player option.  Boston could offer Asik $14 million and still have $7 mil to offer another free agent before using Rondo's Bird rights to go over the cap and resign him.

NO is currently a non-playoff team out West.  If they end the season like that, it's hard to see them blowing all their cap space on Asik.

I wonder if Bass and Thornton will look good to NO at the trade deadline?
