Cleveland: Now have $16 million in unguaranteed contracts next year between Bogans and Haywood which could help them make a major splash. Bogans this year could be the Ray Allen end of the bench role player type they wanted, since they likely went after Bogans due to Allen saying he isn't going to Cleveland. Plus, late 2nds aren't useful to a team like Cleveland, as the cap holds for the picks would get in the way, and they'd have to scramble to deal them on draft night.

A couple quibbles:  I don't think this has anything to do with Ray Allen, necessarily.  I believe the Cavs could sign Ray, and still have roster space to carry Bogans.

Also, second round draft picks don't have cap holds until those players are signed, I believe.  Additionally, I doubt the Cavs care too much about cap holds, as they're unlikely to have cap room to spend for awhile.

What do we know about Dwight Powell?

Wait, he's Canadian? Okay, so we are maybe on our way to building an all NBA/Canada team.

  Maybe we'll put a "B" team in Canada's top pro league. We must be close to 20 players on the roster by now.

When does the exception expire?

1 year.

So again, why did the cavs do this trade?

They could use haywoods non guarantee and the tae which is the same as haywood plus bogans non guarantee for next season . but you dont have to give up the 2nds

anybody can clearify? Roy?

You can't combine a trade exception with anything.

??

The lakers gave up a player and 8.5 TAE for Lin as an example.

Did they? Must have been 2 separate trades? I dunno, I could have it wrong. Someone with more knowledge will let us know LOL.
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

Yep but only 16 guaranteed when we sign Turner. Someone still has to go, most likely Powell if no more moves, he only makes around 500k.

A few things:

1.  The Cavs didn't have a $5.3 million trade exception.  That was created for the Celtics because of the way this trade was structured, but Cleveland wouldn't have had that exception to use otherwise;

2.  Even if the Cavs did have a trade exception, trade exceptions can't be combined with other contracts or exceptions.  In other words, you can't combine Haywood and a $5.3 million trade exception to trade for a bigger salary.  However, you *can* combine non-guaranteed contracts in a deal;

3.  Even though it's a bit irrelevant, non-guaranteed deals are often better than trade exceptions because with non-guaranteed contracts, you can trade for a player making a great deal more than the non-guaranteed player you're sending out.  Hypothetically, you can trade a $10 million non-guaranteed contract for a $15 million player.  You can only trade a $10 million trade exception for a player making $10.1 million or below.

Random, but Erik Murphy is from Rhode Island, and his younger brother, Tomas, is 6' 9" sophomore in high school this year. The middle brother played at Duke for a while, the dad was drafted 31st overall in 1981, and the mom played for the Swedish Olympic team.

EDIT: Finnish national team
OMG....his mom played for the Finnish Olympic team. We NEED this guy.

And just for the comedy value, Ainge sent Cleveland two second rounders they'll never see:

And while the Rockets got a trade exception from the Lin trade, it wasn't given to them by the Lakers. It was a product of the transaction. The Lakers were way under the cap so they just absorbed Lin's salary.

Edit: Obviously re: the trade exception stuff.

I'm starting to dislike TPE's.. Jerk mode, but no one knows how they work or how they're even made and any trade thread always turns into pages of people not understanding it.

Anyway! Good trade. The asset rich get richer, even if only slightly. Picks and even a low tier prospect is quite the win over even remotely having the chance of hearing Bogans cry about not playing.

no, we get the 2nds and give up two that we won't actually give up b/c of protections.
