Next great perimeter defender, per a couple scouts I talked to this week: Marcus Smart. All the tools. Scouts love how he embraces contact.

It looks like danny drafted tony allen part 2.  But a more offensively skilled slightly less athletic version.  He was a beast on the defensive end at the SL. His hands are very quick.

I expect guys like dwade, westbrook will get annoyed being covered by smart. Which is a good thing

Tony Allen part 2 would be great.

Our last "next great perimeter defender" (Bradley) doesn't embrace contact too well and gets absolutely obliterated by screens.  Having someone that can fight through them and not get stuck like he and Rondo do would be refreshing.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

say we keep all 3, we can boast to have one of the best defending backcourts in the NBA. Rondo, Bradley, and Smart can all play defense and plays different type of defense. Having different variations of good indiviidual defense will create problems for the other team

+1.

It will be intereating to see how many positions smart can guard (gave wiggins all he can handle last season)

we have 18 million guards on this team most will play SG and the PG mins will be split between Rondo, Smart, Pressey. how does Smart even come close to having an impact this season? Forget being the RoY, will he even play enough mins. to be a top 10 candidate?

I believe Smart will play a lot at SG opposite Rondo/Pressey.  I think he will be higher in the rotation at 2 than Bogans and Babb (who will both likely be gone before long), Young (spot minutes and/or D-league) and Turner (who I expect to supplant Wallace as the primary backup 3).  Thornton is a wild card but I think he's likely to be traded sooner or later.

SG minutes will probably be split between Bradley, Smart, and Thornton if he sticks around, with dabs of Turner and Young mixed in.  Don't know if that'll add up to 30-35 for Marcus, but he'll be squarely in the rotation at least, and probably our #3 guard overall.

The rotation will be an absolute mess barring a trade. But I would be shocked to see Smart play less then 20mpg.

I expect something along these lines to start the season.

PG Rondo 35mpg, Smart 10 min, Pressey 3min

SG AB 30min, Smart 10min, Thorton 8 min

SF Green 30min, Turner 18min

PF Sully 20min, Bass 15min, KO 10min

C  Zeller 20min, Sully 10min, KO 10min, Fav 5min

That leaves Wallace, Young (D-League) and Anthony totally out of the rotation. Thorton will not be happy with only 8min per and Bass deserves more then 15min on a non-playoff team. It also leave Sully playing to much center. I think the logical move is for Bass to be traded and at the very least more min for Anthony and Fav allowing Sully and KO more time at the 4. Also If Green is moved the team could then play more 3 guard lineup and get wallace some minutes.

Some of this might sort itself out naturally, at least at PG/SG.

Our starting backcourt has missed 150 of 328 games in the last two years. Who knows whether those guys will stay healthy.

Wouldn't shock me on the defensive end.  I think he's a pretty terriffic defender and would be rather shocked if he wasn't at the NBA level.

My biggest question mark is how much he can carry or contribute to a team offensively.  That's where my biggest concerns lie.

That being said, I don't think we'll be looking back at Smart in 3 or 5 years and labeling him a "bust".

#6 pick in the most highly regarded draft class in 10 years .. .. he'd better not be a bust! I don't think he will be, but I also don't think we have a superstar here. Possibly a 3-5 time all-star best case scenario?

Moving Bass and Thornton clears up a lot of those issues in a hurry.  Who knows if it happens or if Danny just lets them expire, though.

EDIT:  There's also a half-dozen more minutes to spare in your 4/5 rotation.

I would certainly hope not.

6th pick isn't a given.  For every Lillard, you have a Vasely & Flynn.  Although, I do tend to agree with you that this draft was more highly regarded that those.

I have zero faith in Marcus Smart being any better than Tony Allen or Avery Bradley---which is pretty sad--given how Deep this draft was supposed to be....The Ping Pong Balls really screwed us this time around.
Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

Guard who's not a shooter/offensive player given the reference to Tony/Bradley would be my guess.

This is laughable - Smart will have a better career than both of those guys and it won't even be close.  Two things will translate right away to the NBA, his defense and his ability to get to the rim and draw fouls....

Smart will be the leader / best player on this team when the C's get good again.  Him and Parker were the two best players in this draft and I am glad the C's have him....

Tony Allen also had great defense and the ability to get to the rim to draw fouls.

Unfortunately he also was turnover prone and couldn't shoot a lick. He mostly keeps his TOs down now-a-days but he still can't shoot.

If Marcus Smart has a better career than TA I'll be stoked.
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

I hope that you are correct...I just have no expectations of him being the next D.Wade--or anything close--I guess we'll see.

Smart already handles the ball better than both of those  guys and passes better as well.  He doesn't shoot as good as Bradley but he is a more complete offensive player now ( before he has even played a game ) because of reasons stated above...

Smart's a stud....his game will really translate to the NBA....
