I know with this post I will be called a variety of names or will be asked why is this a new topic.  I guess this is just a Celtics fan kind of wondering what we're doing and where we are heading. 28 years of being a fan and I never been so down on this team.  Yeah sure we can go back to the late 80's and early 90's and say if it wasn't for a bad back for Bird, a death to Len Bias and Reggie Lewis we may have won another 2 or 3 championships. During and after that the Pitino Era we took a huge dstep backwards, made dumb trades and signed old free agents. At least in the early part of the 90s we were still relevant and had a chance to make noise. Then the new big 3 came along.  Brought us a title and some memorable moments, we should of won atleast one more title but it is what it is. We now are starting over with no real superstar, no Rondo isn't, and it seems no one is going to come here. We drafted a player who seems to be over rated and quite frankly didn't impress me in the summer league, and Young who mysteriously was hurt and couldn't lace up for one game. Most of our current roster is crap, which I don't get why so many people are happy with it. Zeller? Please!!! Olynyk? Please!! Pressey? HAHA! and Bradley?? What was Danny thinking? He could of offered much less to see if anyone matched it before giving the guy 8 million! Rondo, not sure why everyone is in love with him, maybe because he's the last one from the 08 title?

So the point to my post, which I don't even know I have one. Does anyone know or have heard rumors? I am sick of if someone sees a picture of a player in Boston that they must be coming here (Love) or when a player says they love Rondo or think he's the best PG in the NBA then they are coming here too (Cousins, J. Smith). We have players under contract who are not even close to their worth, and no one who wants to come here.  A lineup of:

Rondo
Bradley
Green
Sully
Zeller

is not a good team, nor a playoff team. The team sucks, hate the moves, mad I don't know the direction we are heading and upset Danny hasn't made any noise or brought in anyone to give us hope.  I feel better now, thoughts?

Patience is gonna be required.  I was also frustrated with the Smart draft pick but this draft was SO OVERHYPED there was little chance the Celtics could of moved up and gotten an impact player.

Celts are loaded with draft assets and if we are patient something will fall into our laps.  It always does.  NBA is a fluid league.

Ill give em another year before I start to be concerned.  I really like watching some of these young guys develop.

Understand the frustration but keep the faith!

Nothing we could do about Bias and then Lewis - I think you're looking at maybe another 5-6 titles had we built around that duo.

My biggest frustration since the 80's though is that Ainge didn't put a premier bench behind KG, Pierce and Ray from day one. Actually in 2008 he did and we just crushed the league. But every year after that our bench got weaker as the big three got older.

Moving forward I actually "love" our direction and the current moves. We have:

1. A very nice young core of players
2. A ton of cap space next season
3. A crap load of draft picks over the next 4 years, some of which may be high lottery from NJ.
4. A great young coach
5. A great GM
6. An ownership team willing to spend big "at the right time"

I think we are 1-2 moves away from being serious contenders. Those moves might not happen this year no matter how hard we try (Kevin love...) but they will most likely happen within the next 1-2 years and we'll be off and running again and best of all, as we're so young, we will likely be competing for many years with the next iteration of this Celtics team.

Meanwhile I love watching the young guys develop and I think our team, even as constructed going into this year may surprise people.

Zeller / Faverani / Anyone
Sullinger / Olynyk / Bass
Green / Wallace / Moser?
Bradley / Thornton / Young
Rondo / Smart / Pressey

What is one of Sully or take a major leap this year - that alone would have a big impact.

Whichever direction we go (trade Rondo and youth movement or keep Rondo and add vets) we have great flexibility and a "ton" of chips to rebuild with.

Keep the faith!

I feel your pain. I agree that the current celtics are not very good. This is a team full of role players again. We are most likely going to the lottery again in June.

I haven't heard any rumors for improvement. Kevin love was the only star option out there, but the wolves dont want what the celtics have.

Here is my positive spin:

1. We finally may get to watch a healthy Rondo lead a team as the number one guy. We can finally find out just how much of an impactful all star he is vs being an elite role player. Closure is probably coming one way or the other.

2. We have potential diamonds in the rough. Sullinger and James Young have elite scoring skills, and have the potential to become very good players, even all stars. Of course they are also just as likely to flame out as Glen Davis 2.0 and Todd Day 2.0. But the potential is there.

3. Marcus Smart has the highest ceiling of all the Celtics due to his size, strength and relentless fire and passion. I firmly believe he is going to work his tail off as hard as possible every season and off season to become the best player and winner that he can be.

4. The other role players on the team are skilled good dudes, and not a bunch of Ricky Davis, Eddy Curry, Marbury, Javale MCGee knuckleheads. They will work hard and be professional.

5. Lastly, we have a stack of draft picks coming to us. The Brooklyn picks have potential to be really good, and if we hit the lottery again we have a crack at an excellent draft class of big men.

I appreciate that Ainge isn't making a desperate move just to make a move. He is collecting small assets and keeping the team flexible.

Billy I said it before... Ainge spoiled the fanbase.  There's that whole "3-5 year plan" cliche that new ownership/GM's say when they take over a team.  Ainge took over in 2003 and by 2007 we had a contender in place (although one with a tiny window).  He deserves credit for actually following through on the BS "3-5 year" plan.  When have you seen someone actually succeed at that?  Some teams toil away in mediocrity for decades.

So the fanbase wrongfully believed this was 2007 all over again.  We got ourselves a team full of assets... clearly that means we're going to flip them all for superstars.   Wrong.  This is 2003.  This is day 1 all over again.  We blew it up and we're building with mediocre assets.  It's going to take a few years to even acquire the pieces that can be flipped for stars.   We might get lucky Summer 2015... but folks who thought this was going to be an easy/quick turnaround were off-base.   We need to accept that barring another miracle set of moves by Ainge (in a few years), we could be looking at a team that might suck for 20 years.  This team probably will not crack 40 wins anytime soon.

Year freaking one in a rebuild, what else did you expect?

First, we have a crap ton of picks to use or trade, what other team in this league that is n the same position as the C's have that?

Smart is not over rated. If he didn't impress you in SL, then you didn't really watch it. Your not looking at it the right way, you just want the 30ppg and sportcenter top ten plays. Smart came out as a NBA ready body and defender, and a project PG and shooter. He did exactly what the books say.

He got better at scoring as the games went on. It was like he didn't want to step on any ones toes the first couple of games. His passing was really good, made a lot of great plays. Would have had more assists if guys like Iverson could finish. Didn't have any shooters to spread the floor to make plays. But man, he had some really nice passes that surprised me. His defense was really good. He had so many deflections, and most of them came from the guy he was guarding. You know how impressive that is, to be a few feet from your guy and can react to a pass that fast.

Young was in a car accident with a concision. They said they were keeping him out because of that, although it could have been for trade reasons, but there was a accident, nothing mysterious about it.

Zeller is the first young legit skilled 7 footer we've had since Perk. Now he's more offensive than defensive, but Stevens recruited this guy in high shcool and followed him. I bet he has some ideas of how to use this guy. And we got a pick and expiring out of the deal.

Yes our line up is crap, but it's full of young guys with potential, and guys that over the next couple of years salaries will come off the books opening up cap space, to bring in FA's. Yes we've never brought in a FA. But this is the first time in a long time we've had Cap Space. And first time DA has had time to play with it. I like to see the pitch's he's getting ready for,and you know he's going after every single one of them.

Also, the FA/trade season isn't done. Plenty of time to do some thing. While I'm not expecting fireworks, I could see more moves to get ready to make moves the next couple of seasons.

Venting on your Venting....

What are you talking about?  If you been a fan for 28 years you should remember how awful it was when we had players like Shermen Douglas, Greg Minor, Dee Brown, Rick Fox, Eric Williams, Raef Lefrence, Jiri Welsh and Vitaly Potepinko.  Our great draft picks/rookies Eric Montross, Acie Earl, and Jerome Moise. Our free agent signings Old Dominique, Old Kenny Anderson, and the Dana Baros.

Give me a break....I watched the C's for years when their best player was Dino Radja.  If your more upset than before than I assure you you have been truly invested in the C's because they had ZERO hope in the past..ZERO.

What you sound like is a new generation New England Pink hat sports fans who thinks championship teams grow on trees.  Is it fair to say you are actually 28 years old instead of actually being a fan for 28 years?

Can't win them all and the last good team here was on borrowed time being a team of aging vets.   Welcome to the real world.  Where teams are bad from time to time and have to blow it up before rebuilding.  Hope we get a game changer next draft.  Boston has a lot of championships lately in all sports but most cities don't even get a chance to experience that.

I think you are missing his point. He has been a fan during the endless rebuild days. He knows it is a long road. He also knows the current Celtics aren't going to win a ton of games this year.

Those are depressing things to come to terms with.

None of us know if we are going to be contenders in 3 years or 20.

We instead have to root for hope. The hope of player development as we watch games, the hope for a great draft pick, and the hope thst we eventually have enough assets to outbid other teams for another star player.

You're funny DraftSmart33, I am pushing 40 btw, thank you. I remember Dino, but that was after Reggie and the franchise took a hit.  You don't need to insult my intelligence. I been a fan like I said for 28 yrs, living in NYS. Going to the old Boston Garden, listening to the organ play during the game sitting behind obstructed views. Johnny Most on the call. Attending Bird's retirement ceremony, McHale retirement ceremony. Reggie's ceremony, a dozen or so games growing up at the old garden and a handful in the new one.  I'm a passionate fan just like anyone else in here. Last I checked we route for the same team, not sure why you need to be against me. Back in those Dino, Sherman, Montross days I wasn't expecting championships nor at that time basketball was the first thing on my mind.  All I am saying, venting is why are teams making moves but us. Why is the plan, why do we have so many guards and pf? I don't want to wait 22 years again to win a title, and I am sure no one else does. Why can't we go after players like, Melo, LeBron, Durant, Howard, not that I want some of them but as examples.

Sadly, I am starting to accept the fact that this just isn't our summer.

I think our time will come either next summer or in 2016 (hopefully).

Sad but true.

It'll be a lot easier to watch this team if they're actually trying to get better, instead of trying to get worse.  That's really the difference for me between a squad that might lose a lot of games, but I still enjoy watching, and one that I just can't watch.  When they start making moves to improve the team on the floor, instead of moves designed to get a better draft pick, or to free up salary space.  When they stop giving away players like Courtney Lee (just as one example) because they make too much money.  I understand why that can be a logical trade...  but it just reminds me that they really aren't trying to win, and if they don't care about winning then why the hell should I?
