I agree with the "it makes sense group." Ainge has structured the roster to be in position for the moves that will get his team into contention.
Much of it is timing....regrettably, I think next summer might be a target for him. We all want a decent team to watch this year, thus "get a center" is a popular refrain. I don't think Ainge cares a great deal about the center position right now. He can't get the "championship guy" now so, he won't get anybody.
Thus, in an effort to "make sense" of the roster? Ainge does not want to win a lot of games. He wants to be in position to get the "build around guy(s)."
My concern with Ainge and Kevin Love is that Love isn't an Auerbach kind of player(I would like to get Love BTW). His game is tilted to offense and Auerbach would have to balance his other four guys with defense. Asik, perhaps, wasn't the right type of player for Ainge either, but, it may have been more about timing.
I think we can all be hopeful about Marcus Smart. He is, in fact, an Auerbach type. He is a fighter and a courageous defender, this is the correct type to build around. Hopefully he will develop well and keep his head.
Olynyk is s superb offensive piece. 7 footers with his passing and scoring ability are rare.
Ainge has two good "chances" with these players. They might or might not be "championship caliber." Time will tell.
The rest? The roster makes all the sense in the world because Ainge doesn't need wins, he needs a chance at two stars and he will trot out a centerless team of "complementary players and college all stars" in order to be in position to get them.
