The most intriguing aspect to me is how freakin' big Smart is.  He looks like a tight end or linebacker instead of a PG.

Exactly what I though.

It's funny because these arguments can go both ways. I've seen and played against plenty of guys that could hit every shot in practice but couldn't hit anything in a game. Kind of like Jiri Welsch...that man never missed in practice but come game time he looked like Ben Wallace shooting free throws.

On the other side of that, I've seen guys that didn't consistently shoot well in practice but were decent shooters.

Now the greatest shooters are on all the time but nobody expects Smart or Rondo to ever be great at shooting because they do so much more.

  • Eagerly Awaiting the Next Fantasy Draft
Thoughts
1. He doesn't always jump straight up, but when he does the ball goes in
2. I don't like how he brings the ball down before he shoots it. This is extra motion and the more motion you have in your shot the less likely it is to consistently go in.
3. A lot of Smart's misses in college happened when he shot the ball across his body, he looks to have cleaned this up (at least in practice)
4. Pressy's shot is kind of flat from 3, not a good sign for a young player (coach Stevens said as much in his interview with Rome)
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

No evidence, but could explain a few things.

Yikes....Smart hit 3 out of 5 three-pointers and this is not on the front page of the Globe and the Herald? Unreal. No love for the Celtics..... ;D ;D ;D

Smart's got a lot of work to do.  His shot looks pretty rough.

3-5 in practice for a professional shooter is kind of horrible, honestly.    If you go to games prior to tip-off you usually see guys making most of their shots in practice.  They do this for a living... they can make uncontested shots with their eyes closed.  I remember watching Detlef Shrempf back in the mid 90s warming up for Sonic games... hundreds of shots... I maybe saw him miss a handful of times.

LOL - remember watching Detlef draining shot after shot in warm-ups before HIGH SCHOOL games.  He would then proceed to totally trash my school's team!

I also got to root for him though, during college at the UW.   Loved Detlef.   Great, fundamental all-around player.  He and Christian Welp were both really nice on campus, too.  They were always very relaxed with all the other students on campus, despite being 'star athletes'.
NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.

In the middle vid:

Colton Iverson looked really awkward on that second jump shot there.  Whats up with that funky knee dip?  The first shot looked better.

You can really see the difference in the shot arc between his shot and that of Kelly & Sully's.  Colton looks like he's pressing in that tiny sample.

He looks like he's in terrific shape, though.  I mean, jeeze - he just LOOKs like an NBA center should look!

Relax son.  Play your game.

For those who haven't seen Smart play, they are in for a treat. This guy is strong and knows how to use his body. He has talent and he has "it".

I cant wait to see him play next season!

These are really interesting videos as we get to know Smart and Iverson. Keep in mind that these YouTube videos are Celtics and NBA sanctioned for release.  It's hard to draw conclusions also because they are such tiny samples. We need Summer League to even get a tiny bit of realistic game situation performance, and even at tht, the SL has limitations as it is a run-and-gum league as guys try to impress for rosters spots.

That said, I am very hopeful about Smart. He is NBA-ready in a variety of ways and has a fairly balanced set of skills on both sides of the ball.  He will have a good rookie season. The questions will come in his 2nd and 3rd years as to his ultimate upside.

Iverson and Faverani and the only true Center options at this point. I want to see more of Iverson.  The story on the Celtics official website today says he is really motivated to make the team, and has worked hard on footwork and shooting. He doesn't want to be in Turkey anymore.

You really can't compare a guy, in his first week of the NBA shooting long somewhat contested 3's to a seasoned Vet, during warmups who has about a million shots more under his belt.

His shot looks fine. Good arch on it, which most bad shooters coming out of college are usually pretty flat. He did have that one off the back board, but the next 4 looked good, and he made 3 of them. Plus he's still getting use to the NBA ball which is a lot different.

Plus hitting the long ball is overrated. I'd rather see how consistent he can be around 15 to 18 feet. I think thats were he can start to make his living because it's a dying shot that most teams will give up. He can work on the long ball over the next season or two to add to his game.

AB couldn't hit squat until his second season, and it still wasn't really good until last season. Smarts a gym rat. I wouldn't be surprised if he got better by the end of the season at the latest.
I mean... whatever.  I know what I know.  Professional shooters rarely miss in practice.  Seeing him go 3/5 in practice is nothing to brag about...

It is what it is.   I'm not saying it's cause for alarm.  I'm just saying it's not worthy of celebrating.  Smart was a bad shooter in College.  He'll probably be a bad shooter in the pros.  He could improve, though.  And regardless, he should make an immediate impact off our bench playing hard defense.

Nice video.  Just a few points to note.

1.  Stauskas is shooting from the old college 3 distance from the top of the arc which is generally the easiest and shortest shot to take.  He doesn't have a hand in his face and he is not shooting deep NBA range 3s like the Celtics players in the short practice clip.

2.  Put them 1 on 1 and Smart would eat Stauskas for lunch.  I'm willing to put real money on that.

3.  It's obvious that Stauskas is a good shooter, but will he ever emerge as anything more than a sniper?  The John Paxons and Kyle Korvers of the world are great and all but what they really are is excellent role players, nothing more.

Stauskas has good ball handling and passing skills.  He also tested well athletically at the combine.

Here's a video of him dunking.
