2 "true" statements:
1. Rondo will get the maximum, or at least close to it, from some team next season, whether it's the Celtics and a 5-year extension or another team and the 4-year deal. He is currently the Celtics' best player and they have no excuse not to pay him less, nor is the team good enough to justify a discounted deal "so we can stay competitive." As for the other teams, there will always be teams desperate for stars and there's a lot of cap space around the league to help make the financials happen.
2. Rondo "deserves" the max if you compare him to other overrated players who got max deals, but he doesn't "deserve" the max if you compare him to players better than him also making max deals. This is the crazy system the NBA has created. The true superstars make less than what they're worth and since there 30 teams and not enough stars to go around, the lesser stars get the money left over. That's how a season can exist where Rudy Gay made the same amount (roughly) LeBron did.
The question is, is it easier, harder, or the same difficulty to create a title team with Rondo on the roster making max money, especially considering there are no other stars on the roster currently? Not a 2nd-round playoff team, but a real contender.
The 2nd question is, can the Celtics acquire that second and third star (I am of the opinion that Rondo has to be, at minimum, the third best player on a title team) while Rondo is still in his prime the next few years. He will always be able to pass, but without athleticism and a great shot how will he age?
Finally, with the serious ACL injury he suffered is he even the same player he was before? We should get an answer to that somewhat this season.
