Can we combine a TPE with a player in a trade?

The short answer is no.  More details are here: http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q87

We could trade the TPE for Lin, and I think there's a decent chance that Morey is talking about Boston when he says that he's got a Lin trade ready to go if either Carmelo or LeBron decides to come to Houston.  I suspect that we'd get Parsons in that deal, and we might need to send a pick to Houston.

Other ideas about reasonable uses of the exception?

I want to use these things as a tool to take advantage of Western Conference teams going after LeBron and Carmelo.

I know signs are pointing to LeBron staying in Miami, but if by July 5th it looks like Clippers have a chance at him- we should be talking Sullinger/Picks going over along with TPE from Pierce trade for DeAndre Jordan.  LeBron has to think real hard about joining a team that will have a real big 3 (3 of top 5 players in league)

On a less pipe dream note, can we combine Bogans with the Courtney Lee TPE for Lin and whatever assets we can get?  Capela, Nick Johnson.

For the about 1000th time on this board, you cannot combine the salary of a player and the TPE to take on a single salary which is larger than the TPE.   However, as mentioned at least a few times, Bogans+Johnson+Pressey+Babb (all non-guaranteed) can combine to fit Jordan's salary.

How can Bogans/Pressey/Babb/Johnson equal Jordan?  They make a combined 6 mil.  As far as I can tell, you have to include Faverani and Sullinger to make it work.  Sorry I misses the previous discussion.

So we can trade some kind of combination of contracts for Jordan.  If they want to go for LeBron, we can help them out.  Doc at the very least would want Sullinger and their own pick back next year and would probably want another good pick. Regardless, if the opportunity is there, we should do it.

So the Pierce TPE would be used to absorb Lin,  that makes sense and we would get back Capela and/or Johnson, maybe a 2nd round pick.

Going forward, we would have a PG, a SG, a Center.  Would have to decide if Green or Young is the SF for immediate future, and would need a PF.  I think Olynyk and Bradley could be the first forward and first guard off the bench on a good team.  Most of the pieces would be there.  Draft a PF next year.  Try to combine some of these assets like Green/Bass and future picks and try to upgrade one of the forward spots.

I really think we are in a good spot even if we don't get Love.  There will be moves to make at the trade deadline.  But who knows, maybe Minnesota won't get anything better and they will trade him a month for now.

Might be in the running for the most frequently clarified rule in Cblog history.  Yet, the need to clarify keeps occurring.  I wonder if someone could create a thread that clearly/simply states the rules with regard to using the TPE and we can refer all future query's or incorrect suggested uses of the TPE to that thread.

I bet it does not get used.
I bet it is more likely to be used than for Ainge to sign a FA outright. FA's don't want to come here, to a losing team in the cold Northeast. The TPE, however, could be very valuable to a team looking to shed $10.3M.

Ha. Even then some folks would not read it, or forget it, or be new here. Maybe we should all just put it in our signatures.  ;)
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

I'd use the TPE on Lin, if we can get Parsons or their 1st round picks. I mean, if not we just lose it anyways right?
