I mean of all the pro sports it seems to be the one with the draft closest to the season. Not to talk about having the draft lottery right smack in the midst of the playoffs.

I believe that putting the draft so close to the end of the season takes something away from the past season and the NBA champions. There is absolutely no time to take it all in before you have to move on with the draft.

Thoughts?

Do you know when major league baseball holds its draft?

It seems like it would make more sense to hold the draft a couple weeks after free agency begins similar to the NFL.  That way teams would have a better understanding of their rosters for the upcoming season and use the draft to fill holes.

No I don't, perhaps because there is not as much excitement around the MLB draft as there is in NBA and NFL.

It's always early June.  The timing isn't too important because its very rare for a drafted player to reach the majors within the first year.

I like it where it is. For many fans, the draft is probably more pertinent to their team's fortunes than the playoffs, and that's including some of the teams that make it. Waiting forever for it to happen to lengthen to "news cycle" like the NFL does is just torturing the fans.

These days people forget about news stories a few days after they happen, so even if the draft was later it's not like the Spurs would be getting so much coverage. Besides the parade, what is there really to report? The players pretty much go home and MAYBE appear on a few talk shows.

Gotta give time for rooks to get drafted settle into a city and gel with team and their surroundings. The earlier the better.

Agreed -- too close to the NBA Finals. It's a distraction that takes away from the playoffs.

It'd be better if it was another month away.

If your team is in the playoffs, I assure you its not a distraction.

I'd actually like to move up the date to when the Celtics are no longer playing.  For me, it HAS been a wait of 2 months since the NBA was relevant.

As far as letting the champions bask in the glory longer -- who really cares?  if is was the C's, sure, but did the draft of 2008 stop fans from enjoying the championship?  not at all.

is anyone here actually saying they want to enjoy the Spurs winning the title a little longer without a draft to distract them?

It's fine where it is IMO - I'm sure the Spurs couldn't care less about the timing of the draft - although the wait between lottery and draft seems a bit too long. I know teams need to know where they're going to pick before they start compiling ideas for potential trades etc., but the wait is driving me nuts.

I just think that the draft is very exciting. Lots of new players. It is fun reading up on them and finding out more about them.

But it's hard to during the playoffs because there are so many games ... and because of that, I believe if there was more separation from end of playoffs until NBA draft, one could get even more enjoyment and excitement out of the lead up to NBA draft.

I think its fine where it is.  Finals rolls into the draft which rolls into summer league and so on....  Makes the summer more enjoyable from a basketball sense.

I'm not buying that it takes away from the playoffs or the Finals.  For the most part, the teams most heavily invested in the draft haven't played a lick of basketball since April so it keeps those fans engaged.   There's plenty of time to speculate the draft AND discuss the playoffs during May & June.

I'd much rather have it a week or two after the finals end than waiting almost 3 months like they do with the NFL.    You wanna talk about paralysis by overanalysis?  That's about as bad as you can get.
