I am all up for getting an all star PF like Kevin Love but I dont want to risk the future for him. If the Wolves are willing to come down to reality and accept a decent offer I say do it if not . I say you keep the picks draft what is best for this team at 6 and 17. Maybe take on some bad contracts for a year from some teams that are looking at adding Melo. Ala Houston Chicago while getting some more first round picks.I would be ok with not making the playoffs next year if it ment clearing more cap space for a fresh start for 2015. Also with having 2 first round picks next year as well we would be sitting pretty. Just my 2 cents.

Well what would you want to do about Rondo. A decision has to be made and we really should not chance him just walking away. I suggested in another thread that we could trade Rondo to the Lakers for #7, and future first. We may need to take back Steve nash, anyone know another contract/ option to do this??

draft: Smart and Vonleh with 6 and 7, trade down from 17 to get Kyle Anderson and a 2nd rounder. With the second rounder we could select Isiah Austin.

Smart
Avery
Jeff Green/kyle anderson
Sully/ko
Noah Vonleh/ Isaiah Austin

I doubt Lakers want to trade future firsts.  Can't afford it.

I'm assuming we don't get Love and we facilitate a cap clearing deal with HOU for Asik, Lin + 25th in the "project your roster in 10 days" thread.  I think if RR wants to stay and will if he sees progress.

Adding Asik, Smart, and Warren (or Vonleh and best SG available 1t 17 instead) constitutes good progress. Use HOU's 25th to stash a Euro or trade to someone looking for a pick this year for a future 1st + other consideration.

But if we are taking on bad contracts then that blows our chances of cap space in 2015... Also, we already have enough/too many draft picks.

that team is freaking awful.   if i were the lakers i would do it though.   then go sign carmelo.   rondo, kobe and carmelo?   make the playoffs at least.

Why is it awful?

Because there are two rookie starters, an inconsistent guy who doesn't show up some nites, and a guy who is injured a lot?

Trading Rondo is a bad signal to the rest of the players and should be avoided unless he demands it. He will demand a trade if he gets tired of waiting and thinks the team is no improving. Too many rookies in key roles is not improving.

depends on the definition of bad contract.  Asik and Lin are 'bad' contracts for Houston because they want to land a top FA.  both expire next year so they don't blow our 2015 cap.  we also have the best shot of resigning Asik who will not be worth what he's making this coming year.  he's a legit center which would allow us to focus on improving other parts of the team in 2015 via FA or the draft

I think cap space can be overrated.  More often than not you can't sign a star player, and may possibly overspend on role players.  I remember reading once all stars over the last 10 to 15 years mostly come from teams that drafted or traded for them.  I can't remember the percentage but it was low in comparison for teams that straight signed an all star.

I'd rather keep the cap space occupied with manageable contracts that can be used in trades.  I also wouldn't be opposed to taking on contracts if we get more picks as picks are the easiest thing to trade in the future.  That's all if we can't go all in now for Love and other win now moves.

I'm absolutely fine with using our various exceptions and non-guaranteed contracts to take on contracts other teams don't want.  What I'd like to emphasize, however, is bad contracts can still be useful players.  Their contracts are just larger than their use, and the team getting rid of them has a better use for those dollars (including their owners not Amnestying or being willing to pay the luxury tax.)  Houston doesn't want to pay for Lin and Asik any more?  Sign me up.  Asik fills a void on last year's team, and Lin takes Bayless' role.  Both of those players are useful, improve our team, and don't cost any future assets, so we can try to get a star again next summer, while improving for next season.  If we get a draft pick to boot, all the better.

OKC wants to rid themselves of Perk?  Fine.  Perk again fills a role on this team, and if we get a first rounder, sign me up.  Boozer costs too much for Chicago, but they don't want to amnesty?  Bass plus non-guaranteed contracts will save them $10 million.  Sign me up if we get pick #16 or #19 this year.  Boozer is a useful player, probably better than Bass.  He's just not $17 million useful.

There are a host of players like this.  Taking bad contracts does not necessarily mean tanking.  It can mean improving next year's team at no cost of future assets, or maybe even gaining assets.  There's no reason to trade Rondo in this scenario, or even Green.  It does not cost future cap space, so we can try again next summer, with an even better position than this summer.
