so wait , would Melo lose money if he is signed and traded by New York instead of just signing with a team that has the cap room ? If that's the case we can pretty much narrow it down to Houston( if they can clear the cap space by moving Asik and Lin) , and LA has the cap room , or Mia if they can get their big three to opt out .

Without a sign and trade from New York, Carmelo's next contract will only be for four years. Knicks can give him a fifth year worth around $25 mil.

Jordan's first act was to give away all his talent for nothing.  I wouldn't be surprised if Phil doesn't mind tearing it all down and building from scratch with no debilitating contracts and high draft picks.

He'll make the most money signing with the team that has his Bird Rights in free agency. The new CBA put a strict limit on how long a sign-and-trade contract can be because of his shenanigans leaving Denver.

Best option if Carmelo leaves. Rebuilding from scratch with cap space and high draft pick(s).

It's not the end of the world if Melo does leave. The Knicks will have so much flexibility to bottom out and rebuilding their team quickly. I mean, either way, whatever happens with Melo, the Knicks chances are very good of building a strong team. Losing Melo is not something that the Knicks should be afraid of. They are well setup either way.

The Celtics would be in play if they had made the playoffs.  Carmelo Anthony is not going to agree to a sign and trade unless the other team looks like a contender.

what if Love is already on the team? I wouldn't want Melo if we don't get Love ,  but would still want Love if we don't get Melo.

A s&t will benefit both Melo & NY. Personally i think he'll be traded to Chicago if he agree to a s&t since Boozer is available. If no he could join Boston, Houston, LA or Miami.
