I'm not a stats geek.  Kudos to you if you are.  I'm more of an eye ball kind of guy:  I kind of base my opinions on what I see with my own eyes.  It has its shortcomings, but I'm too old to change my ways.

I know that Kevin Love currently has a much higher scoring average than Kelly. Ditto for his rebounding.

I know that a lot of the "promise" about Kelly arises from a summer league season, and his last month or two of his rookie season. Pretty small, and selective, sample size.

But......

It seems that Love's rookie stats are not that much different than Kelly's.  Especially when you factor in Kelly's injuries, which cut into his minutes.  I would imagine that their productivity on a 30 minutes basis was pretty similar.

Their skill sets seem very similar: Neither particular quick or athletic. Both very hi bbiq.  Each with a nice shooting touch, including from 3 point range.  Tall, but not long.

Oh, and Kelly is 2" taller, is a better ball handler/play-maker, and a couple of years younger.  Not to mention a lot cheaper on the books.  Also not likely to demand a max contract anytime soon.

I drew this comparison after someone posted a pretty long highlight video of Love.  It made me realize the similarities in their games.

This is not an effort to convince anyone that Kelly is already just as good, or nearly as good as Love. I'd lose that argument.

But, I reasonably expect that Kelly projects to be a pretty similar player. Probably won't achieve the same scoring average, especially, and hopefully, if he is among other really good scoring team-mates, a luxury that Love has not had, and the absence of which has undoubtedly padded his stats.

My other point here is this:  Do we really want to commit one of two max contracts to a player like Love, with his obvious deficiencies noted above, not to mention inadequate defense, and then actually expect to compete with the likes of Lebron James, or Kevin Durant and their supporting casts??  I think that is an extremely unrealistic expectation.  Max contracts should be saved for only a handful of players.

Olynyk is 3 inches taller.

Olynyk has easy 20 ppg potential, and it's likely to be within 2 years. He'll never rebound as well as Love.

We are in an incredible spot with two top 20 picks in an outstanding draft, and we have KO and Sully on rookie contracts.

Most people here will bash you and say that Olynyk will never amount to anything because he played poorly his first 40 games of his career, and nothing else matters.

But if he starts next season as confident with his dribble drives and shooting as he ended last season, he can indeed be a go to scorer who can create his own shot, and we know he is a great shooter.

My eyeballs tell me that Olynyk does not have the coordination, athleticism, body control, strength, or basketball instincts as Love.  I don't think there's any comparison between the two.  Love is not as good as Lebron and Durant, that doesn't mean he can't beat them with a good supporting cast.

I keep changing my mind about what the direction of the Celts should be, but with Mr Love in town, I'm excited.

I just had my eye exam yesterday (this is true). I suggest you do the same.  Because your description above rings quite false to me.

Signing Love to a max contract (or Rondo to a max, for that matter) would be a big mistake.

In terms of being a three-point shooting big man with the potential to score 20 ppg, comparing Olynyk to Love makes more sense than comparing Sullinger to Love.

Only if the celtics also get 3 first rounders in return as part of the package. After all, fair is fair.

In terms of being a three-point shooting big man with the potential to score 20 ppg, comparing Olynyk to Love makes more sense than comparing Sullinger to Love.

Well looking at it from a 20point, 12-15 rebound per game power forward with stretch four capability then I'd say Sully is the closer match. Olynyk just doesn't have the hook shots, the post game or the rebounding instincts of Sully and Love.
Seems to me Sully is much more likely to be the 20ppg/10rpg guy that we compare to Love, where as Olynyk would be more a hybrid between Dirk and a traditional PF?
If that makes sense.

edit: to the OP, no we don't have the next K Love in Olynyk, he's not even close unfortunately.

Read that last line again. One more time.

This thread is based on an observation in which KLove is extremely underrated and KO is overrated.

I'm as big of a KO fan as the next guy, but you are truly missing out on the monster player KLove is.

Win Shares, Points Per Game, Rebounds, Player Efficiency Rating..all tops in the league despite going against the most difficult teams in the West.  Also a fact that is often misunderstood is that Minnesota's starting 5 actually played fairly well it was the teams lack of depth that crushed them night in an night out.  So no his stats are not padded and yes he actual can help his team win.

KO could be a nice player...but in the same regard JGreen could score 40 a game.  A coach wants a known quantity..not wishful thinking..not inconsistency.

and KLove = consistency

Of course.  Just making a few points: 1. Their games are similar. 2. Factoring in KO's injury, their first seasons statistically not much different. 3.  Love not worth a Max Deal if our goal is to win championships.  I am not saying that they are on the same level right now, or even that Ollie will ever reach that statistical level.
