I'm not a stats geek. Kudos to you if you are. I'm more of an eye ball kind of guy: I kind of base my opinions on what I see with my own eyes. It has its shortcomings, but I'm too old to change my ways.
I know that Kevin Love currently has a much higher scoring average than Kelly. Ditto for his rebounding.
I know that a lot of the "promise" about Kelly arises from a summer league season, and his last month or two of his rookie season. Pretty small, and selective, sample size.
But......
It seems that Love's rookie stats are not that much different than Kelly's. Especially when you factor in Kelly's injuries, which cut into his minutes. I would imagine that their productivity on a 30 minutes basis was pretty similar.
Their skill sets seem very similar: Neither particular quick or athletic. Both very hi bbiq. Each with a nice shooting touch, including from 3 point range. Tall, but not long.
Oh, and Kelly is 2" taller, is a better ball handler/play-maker, and a couple of years younger. Not to mention a lot cheaper on the books. Also not likely to demand a max contract anytime soon.
I drew this comparison after someone posted a pretty long highlight video of Love. It made me realize the similarities in their games.
This is not an effort to convince anyone that Kelly is already just as good, or nearly as good as Love. I'd lose that argument.
But, I reasonably expect that Kelly projects to be a pretty similar player. Probably won't achieve the same scoring average, especially, and hopefully, if he is among other really good scoring team-mates, a luxury that Love has not had, and the absence of which has undoubtedly padded his stats.
My other point here is this: Do we really want to commit one of two max contracts to a player like Love, with his obvious deficiencies noted above, not to mention inadequate defense, and then actually expect to compete with the likes of Lebron James, or Kevin Durant and their supporting casts?? I think that is an extremely unrealistic expectation. Max contracts should be saved for only a handful of players.
