Draft Smart at #6.
Trade Rondo to Sacramento for #8 and McLemore.
Draft Saric at #8.
Trade up and draft Stauskas (DExpress has him going #13)
Trade for Asik...I'm guessing the Pierce TE and a couple of 2nd (Philly's?) will do it.

9 man rotation. We rotate 3 bigs (Asik, Sullinger, Olynyk). Sometimes have Saric at the 4. Olynyk/Sullinger and Stauskas/McLemore will battle it out for starting spots. Regardless, all 4 will earn significant playing time. We would lose our fair share of games, but that is a good young foundation with plenty of upside and gives us immense cap space/flexibility in the summer of 15.

Starters-
Sullinger or Olynyk
Green
Asik
Smart
McLemore or Stauskas

Saric
Sullinger or Olynyk
Bayless, Pressey, or other PG
McLemore or Stauskas

That team could be a force in a couple of years...

Guess again.

Not sure why. We would be giving them cap relief, should they want to target a free agent. Those Philly picks will be really early in the 2nd round, so in essence it'll be like giving them 2 late 1st rd picks, albeit without the guaranteed contracts.

Say Love goes to the Lakers as expected.

The Lakers don't have a competitive offer for Love even if we assume Cleveland and Philadelphia won't offer up their picks.

Draft: 8 first rounders in next 5 years.

Cap space: $24 mil.

Well, it's easy for you to say PHI will have essentially first round picks with their second rounders the next two years, but it's another thing for HOU to believe that.

Phoenix has the reigning rookie of the year, a top 3 pick this year, another top 10 pick this year, 4 second round picks including picks 32 and 39 (essentially first round picks in your language), and Nerlens Noel making his debut.

With all those 2nd round picks this year PHI can scoop up a bunch of proven college stars to fill holes in their rotation. Guys like Patrick Young, PAC 10 POY Nick Johnson, and Russ Smith, for example. These guys can help a team win games as rookies, even if they get passed over in the draft for theoretically higher upside guys.

Agreed.

Draft BPA (I have no idea who that is) and trade for Asik.

Aim for the playoffs.

If we end up with a PF the most sure thing player most likely would be Randle. Most defined game and did fine in the athletic testing.

Couple things...

Trading Rondo isn't really "small potatoes".  And I don't think trading him to the Kings is an option.  He will not re-sign there.

But if we DID trade Rondo, would it really make any sense to trade for Asik at that point?  We would need to give up a 2nd rounder to get him.. but what's the point in bringing in a 28 year old center if we've gotten rid of our 28 year old PG.  If we were trading Rondo and going full youth, it seems it would make more sense to trade for a young center... a bismack biyombo or something.

The basic premise of your idea would be pretty exciting, though.  Building around all sorts of young players... developing them over the next few years with hopes a couple turn into stars.  That'd be fun if we had the patience.

Just as an aside, after Barnes' disappointing season, I'm pretty confident Boston would hold all the leverage in a potential trade involving Sullinger.

I have the same question.  I could see Love signing with the Lakers once he is a UFA but I don't see how the Lakers could put a trade together this year for him.

To the balance of the original question, I don't think there will be any small potatoes moves.  It seems to me DA will just make the picks, maybe with some minor up or down the draft board moves to get a player he likes (like with Olynyc last year).  He can just keep assembling assets until there is a transformational move on the table.

Since "small potatoes" was in quotes I figured it was a very loose definition.  ;)

The Kings would have 1 year on selling him. He would be playing alongside Cousins and Gay. More importantly, however, they would be able to give him more money than anyone. Give him max contract, which is likely more money than any team would give and he'll re-sign. I'm pretty confident in that.

Aisk to me is simple. I trust him to give us meaningful minutes, he has great familiarity with Ron Adams, he can offer solid interior defense, his presence helps Sullinger and Olynyk play more of their natural position, and he is readily available.

Small potatoes:
take BPA at 6 and 17.
cut Bogans and babb loose
don't resign Hump or Bayless
use TPE on Asik IF Houston is trying to cut salary to get Melo.

I think we'll see a play for love with at least the #6 pick in play.  figure about a 50/50 shot of it happening.  I just don't want Danny giving away the farm to land a guy that may get us to the bottom seed of the playoffs and not have anything left to add another all-star to the roster

Here is a "small potatoes" option:

Draft: Vonleh at #6.  Draft a wing at #17 (Anderson, Young, Hood.  Maybe even Levine on potential).  Trade Bass for a 2nd Rounder and draft another wing or Eurostash (too many to list).  Would love to find a way to add Stauskas in addition to/in place of the above list at 17 too, but not sure how we get there given his expected draft position.

Post Draft: Qualifying offer to Bradley.  Sign UFA Emeka Okafor.  Sign UFA Greg Steitsma. Sign 1 or 2 scrap heap wings (PJ Tucker, Wesley Johnson, Xavier Henry, Marvin Williams)

Not exactly exciting, but if Vonleh were the pick I'm not expecting much at all in the 1st half of year 1 from him, and I think it is important that Sully, KO and Vonleh (when he earns minutes) can play PF primarily with only some alternative lineups with them at C.  Additionally we'd add defense and 3 point shooting on the wing.  Probably wouldn't want to go any higher than $3M per year for any of the wings (and ideally lower).

We'd win more games, and find out how far along our best young guys are.  MAYBE even sneak into the playoffs.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Draft Dario Saric, trade Rondo for a upper middle class pick (like a pick that drives an Acura, but it's a 2010 and they're paying it off responsibly and have a nice retirement plan) along with Gerald Wallace's contract , and maybe getting back another high risk/high reward player, and use the second pick on the 2 guard Danny likes best, continue to plan to turn it around in summer '15. Acquire Asik.
