2.  Houston isn't going to deal Asik for Bass and a couple of second rounders.  If they move Asik, it will be for legitimate assets, or cap space.  This deal gives them neither.
I don't think they're getting much in assets for Asik, cap space if they're convinced they can sign away melo is the only way I think it happens.

They were offered a first rounder for him last year, and I'm sure they could get a similar offer this year if they're not getting a non-guaranteed contract.

The trade exception and the Clippers pick would make a lot of sense for him.

Yeah, I am pretty positive that that would get it done.  It might not even take the Clippers pick, if we're fully absorbing Asik's salary.  Heck, we might even be able to get a #1 from Houston if we also take on Lin (using non-guaranteed contracts).

Who made that offer, though?

Reportedly the Celtics, at the very least.  If the Rockets didn't take that offer last year, they're not doing it now for less.

I think Asik has somewhat less trade value now than he did last year, given his salary and contract.

He had the same contract and salary last year, though.  While his value to a contending team is less (since they would have gotten him for last year's playoff run, as well), I don't think it's changed that much for a rebuilding team.  Heck, it's better for a team like the Celts to acquire Asik now, since last season we would have had to worry about him contributing to wins and blowing our lottery position.

I can't imagine a scenario where Asik for Bass + second rounders happens.
