If the Celtics want to trade into a quick rebuild, they will need to target a top 10 or at least top 20 player. The trick is most of those players are not available at draft time. The closest candidates are:
1. Kevin Love - but Minnesota is still determined to keep him. The soonest i think he is available is mid season next year.
2. Carmelo Anthony - free agent, so can't get him on draft day. He is going to play the market of contenders, which rules out the Celtics.
No other superstars are remotely available. In the next couple years a few big names will approach free agency and we have to hope things sour on their current teams, or a trade can happen:
Westbrook, Noah, Harden, George - these guys could become available if their current team panics. But we aren't there yet. I dont want to give up a multi draft pick plus Rondo and Sully package for Harden and George anyway. I don't see them as number one guys.
I say draft players, stay young, develop them, keep a few veterans around to set the tone, then reassess next year. Certainly keep tabs on Kevin Love, and make smart upgrade trades when possible.
