too early to tell IMO. what this team looks like this year is going to be very different next year and the year after.

I would guess Rondo would have a sit down with ainge regarding what his plans are with the team.

but really, if we can get a Top prospect in the draft to pair with Rondo that is a large step towards contending. thats why I think it is important that we can get one of Wiggins/parker/Embiid/Exum

Keep your feelings aside. If you were soon to be 30 year old Rondo do you want a slow and steady rise with the Celtics loaded with picks and likely to be very good but not for at least three years.

Or for the purpose of this thread would you rather go to a team like Sacramento, Rudy Gay a veteran ball hog scorer, and one of the best young big men in the game Demarcus who's only 23 years old but also a head case. It's either a team like that of a team with a high lottery pick you would be going to.

What path would you choose if you were Rajon.
As we all know from this road trip, Rondo doesn't go to Sacramento even when he's not playing  ;D

If I'm Rondo, the most advantageous thing to do is play out the current contract, see where the team is heading, if improving with good odds of being a really good team, I resign after the contract to the most money the C's can give me provided it's at least comparable to the other offers coming in.

It's one thing to give a hometown discount but it has to be close.  not taking 11 mill a year from C's if I'm offered $15 elsewhere regardless if I'd prefer to stay.

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
When KG stuck with Minnesota through their terribleness, he was called loyal to a fault. As in, it was poor judgement.

If you're super-loyal and never win, your career is a what-if, a cute ancedote.

If you leave and win, you're a winner.

When could have KG left easily though? He was under long term contracts. I know he talked about it like he could have forced his way out, and that may have been true.

But in the end he was dealt one year away from his ETO, which is pretty much the pattern with every "star" player. They don't get traded till they have one year left on their deal or are in fact expiring midseason (via option or actual contract termination)

He wasn't missing the playoffs till after the WCF run and at that point he was locked in till pretty much when he got moved.

Like most have said, I wait until I'm a free agent. This can get me the most money and maybe more important, possibly angle for a no-trade clause.

I do think Rondo needs to see what's out there, jumping to the Knicks or some other crappy situation is probably less appealing than Boston even if it fully commits to the youth movement.

But given the number of teams with cap space I think it'd be shocking if there aren't a few good situations for him. The C's plan is to be one of those teams so they can get Rondo + another player by all reports. Or if Rondo leaves you have the options to figure it out from there.

It's a risky proposition for sure as there will likely be many teams with cap space in 2015.

It's so tough to gauge Ainge, but I'm not sure he wants to enter that summer with the possibility of losing Rondo for nothing.

Honestly with the new CBA this is the new reality for ALL NBA teams. You can't sign lucrative extensions anymore, your stars are going to be FAs no matter what you do now after their first big deal.

So you've got to adapt beyond just moving a guy with a year left on his deal. Most contracts are only 4 years, some are 5 and you can't get those extensions like you used to.

True. That's a good point.

What was the reasoning behind this when it was put in the new CBA?

The league wants more player movement to help with parity and the ability to turn teams around more quickly. The goal was to reduce the incumbent team's overwhelming advantages so FA could provide similar hope that the draft does for star players.

Player movement was one of the NBAs big non-revenue related goals this CBA negotiation.

Rondo will not get the biggest deal in Boston. This is what I hope anyways. He's a Josh Smith level player (Atlanta version). Meaning he's a great role player on a title team or even a 3rd-4th option but you cannot build a successful team around him, cannot be done. Give me all of your reasoning of "Playoff Rondo" because of the amazing way he played vs the 8th seed Sixers or the Rose-less Bulls etc...but he has not shown the ability to bring a team to the playoffs by himself. Now that might not be fair to him in terms of this year but any team that pays him the max will not get what they pay for. Unless of course it's a sign and trade and it's a team like the Lakers that can put hall of game talent around him. The only way that hall of fame talent will come to Boston is through the draft or trades. No future hall of famers in their prime will ever sign here. The weather sucks and the taxes are too high.

I would trade him to the first sucker that overpays.

Peak level KG in 2004-2005 coming off an MVP season couldn't get his team the playoffs by himself.

If you standard is get your team to the playoffs by himself then you're going to trade every player who isn't LBJ/Bird. Heck you might even be trading one of those players depending on the year, conference, and how bad your supporting cast is.
